i'm not sure how off-topic this is. i am evel less sure i am connecting the dots accurately. gentle feedback appreciated. please spare me the unsolicited advice. i am connecting ptsd dots. unsolicited advice is easier to process after the dots are connected. at present, not even **i** have all the facts. i am quite certain dear abby doesn't have them, either.
from my 60's child prostitute eye view, young hippies were most known for stiffing their free lovers and giving hideously impractical advice on how to discuss free love with an angry pimp. we aren't talking to your favorite hollywood role models, wise one. i found my escape route in the army in 1973, near the very end of the viet nam involvement. i don't believe i need to tell even the youngest of us how the young hippies reacted to my military uniform. by the time i finished my army stint in 1976, bell bottoms and beads had given way to the yuppie fad and the beat goes on.
fast forward to the turn of the 90's and the long forgotten hippies re-emerged in my life through a childhood friend of my husband's childhood. the man loved "pushing my buttons" and always warned me by reminding me that he was an old hippie. i bet i wouldn't have liked you as a young hippie, either. asshole. hubs stood by his childhood bud until he died from a drunken fall on a street curb. i blessed hubby's loyalty, but i dropped out of that relationship fairly early. no, i didn't attend the funeral, either.
a few years later, my eldest son brought his junior high crush to meet me. she was wearing bell bottoms, a tie-died t-shirt, beads and sandals. fashions cycle. seeing old world fashions on adolescants never has been much of a surprise. the surprise came when my son introduced me as, "an old hippie." shrug-a-lug. i don't often argue historical semantics with pre-adolescant children, though i believe that story ended with a note saying, "no, dear, i can't build you a commune."
in the decades since, reminders such as i received from my hubby's childhood friend have been showing up in some of the damndest places. most recently it showed up in a woman giving me unsolicited advice on how to use lawyers to maximize the government benefits we recieve on behalf of our 3 orphans. we didn't ask for those benefits. cps packed them in the suitcase they delivered with the children. they are being direct deposited into college fund accounts for each of the children.
the piece which is niggling is, what's with the old hippie alerts? what does that even mean here in almost 2024?
am i making sense? anybody else noticed?
i leave the mood icon squarely on okay. i'm an amateur linguist/etymologist. following language roots and trends is my favorite hobby.

Once again I've had a fever today. I'm not going to the hospital because that's a huge waste of time but I did schedule a dr appointment for Wednesday afternoon.

So, like people who say slavery wasn't part of the US Civil War, I reckon "old hippies" are best swept out the front door of my brain. "Shoo! Begone!" like I'm yelling at a chicken, to be honest.
They can entertain themselves elsewhere.
Gentle puma purrs as you ponder.
the diff between 60 and 70 is nowhere near as big as the diff between 15 and 25. time truly is relative.
in the young hippie fad, i was "a bubblegummer" or "teeney bopper." after the young hippies stiffed me, they just knew i would be able to discuss fee love with an angry pimp if i wasn't such a pathetic bubblegummer. i find myself wondering if your generation suffers all the same flaws as the pathetic bubblegummers who were just as alien in kiddie whorehouses as the other fashion subgroups. just wondering
for what it's worth
i just googled, "bubblegummers." i grew up kinda nice. i like today's bubblegummers considerable more than i liked the young hippie bubblegummers.
But I was more innocent of the sex involvement due to youth and I so wish you had been to
Fashion, Woodstock, the music,, drugs, and I suppose 'free love' although I expected anyone who was living this to have a choice,
Even a lot of these kids who made a choice I'm sure paid for it in harsh ways
Forrest Gump I thought did a good job of portraying hippies
I wish you'd had that choice.... Big hug of comfort and support.... xo
for sure, i liked forrest gumps hippies --and all the other tv hippies-- a whole heap better than the morons who stiffed me with the insistence that even a bubblegummer should be able to discuss free love with an angry pimp. i guess forrest didn't meet that side of the hippie fad.
my casual investigation of this linguistic snot knot is leaning toward the translation, "i am suffering arrested development and haven't learned a new song since 1970."
the last person who issued the old hippie alert was a geriatric beauty queen. it blows my mind imagining a meeting between she and the falling down drunk who first first issued me this alert back in the 80's. my spider senses believe they would be far more likely to free hate each other than to free love one another. i would invest in riot protection gear before introducing the two.
sigh. . .
insert the classic song from my own journey through the 60's

nope. not off-topic. methinks i am experiencing yet another emerging trauma memory from the 60's. i think i see that those old hippies were still quite young but i was young enough that 20 something free lovers looked old to me. fact is, proof remains unavailable either way. fact or fiction? does that matter here in the 21st century. the certainty is that it was a very long time ago.
i think i got a song out of it. maybe. maybe just a sarcastic anger channel
free love me, baby, free love me
blast your flower power into my dreams
free love me, baby, free love me
let your wisdom lead my schemes
free love me, baby, free love me
help me explain your free love to my pimp
sigh. . . without the peppy tune i've been channeling by, it sounds a bit sick. sick as an old hippie's free love?
