Since I've been in and out of the hospital 3 times in the last week for treatment for my kidney damage sustained when taking Seroquel for PTSD nightmares, I've gotten physically weak in ways that make it challenging to work. I'm used to being able to power through challenging times, but that reached its limits last July when I collapsed in class in front of students while teaching.
I've only taken 2 sick days this semester despite all of the hospital treatment I've had to undergo. I'm glad that I've gotten the doctors at my hospital to work with me on an outpatient basis instead of making me stay overnight inpatient. Staying inpatient for IV fluids doesn't make much of a difference as opposed to returning to the hospital as needed for IV fluids in the ER on an outpatient basis. It's good, then, that I'm making it to work like I am. Missing work and getting behind there would only compound my problems upon returning to work after sick days inpatient that don't boost my recovery that much.
I am finding myself to be physically weaker than I've been in about 8 years, though, and it's hard for me to adjust to. Some of my students are finding it difficult to adjust to a weaker me as their teacher, too, wanting the level of attention from me that I was happy to provide when in better health to do so.
I know in a way it's just about the natural process of aging, something we all must face sometime. But I'm not feeling very strong right now. Some support would really be a boost.

Once again I've had a fever today. I'm not going to the hospital because that's a huge waste of time but I did schedule a dr appointment for Wednesday afternoon.

When my morning sickness was 24/7 for months...I got so weak that I'd get dizzy just standing up. Wasn't easy.
I learned to pace, pace, pace myself. I woke up early and gave myself hours to do things that used to take minutes.
As for your students, remember they weren't there in your past years. They're only here now. If you have a friend that can help you...ask for help. Beyond that, in class sit as much as you can.
***A bit of a different situation, but my son is dealing with a situation from one of his professors who is teaching a class for the first time.
It's a frustrating reality for college students that 90% of the learning is up to them. I personally think that England's system of A-levels would be a better transition into the different kinds of learning. But...that's another story.***
I also believe in you and I am sending you good thoughts.
And yeah, as much as I want to be a good teacher, ultimately I'm just a resource for those students who want to learn in the first place. Thanks for reminding me--for my sake and for theirs. For my sake to lighten my load, and for their sake to give them praise and credit for being active learners.
I'm grateful, y'all. What you replied here made a difference tonight. I can rest a little easier now as I go to bed. I'm glad I reached out for daily strength, because you all do give it.
Please take care of you.... That is what's most important in all of this..... That you get what you need to heal and be well...… xo
Big hugs <3
He's from the same place in Mexico where I go all the time, the city of San Cristobal in the state of Chiapas. So we had a good two hours or so of fun conversation, since I just got back from visiting there last month.
Your words and their generosity are helping me to get stronger day by day.
