My rent suddenly increased 33%
I hope to be here longer tomorrow, but today I couldn't because I was scrambling all day. Out of nowhere my landlord upped my rent 33% for my second year in this apartment starting next month a week from now.
:-(
It's the second time this has happened to me since I retired here to Mexico 2 years ago because of fainting for the 5th time from Chronic Kidney Disease from a bad psychiatrist's giving me too much Seroquel for PTSD nightmares.
:-(
I have been a good sport about retiring to Mexico rather than staying retired in the USA because although I contributed to my retirement plan in the US throughout my 40 year teaching career, I couldn't afford retirement in the States. Now what's happened here twice in Mexico since retiring here is that a landlady has me pay normal rent the first year in an apartment I rent from her, and then ups the rent by 33% for the second year. The nickname for us US citizens down here in Mexico is "gringo," so it looks like these landladies figure they'll let me settle into their rental property, and then spring a 33% "gringo tax" on me suddenly if I want to stay on. It's not very nice.
:-(
I've been looking for a vacant apartment to rent elsewhere in my neighborhood, and this afternoon I got a lead on one. I hope it's available so I can move in this week. I hope it rents to me at the regular rate, too. Sure would be nice if I didn't get another 33% "gringo tax" added onto my rent again a year from now, but first things first. I've got to get out from under this situation so I can continue to afford retirement by being retired here instead of there.
:-(
Support welcome.

Once again I've had a fever today. I'm not going to the hospital because that's a huge waste of time but I did schedule a dr appointment for Wednesday afternoon.

! ! !WHERE'S MY PERFECT LIFE! ! !
continued support while you work through all those gory details.
always something to keep us challenged, huh?
I wish this would not be happening to you. It just makes for more stress.
Ping us if you need to vent, okay?
I don't know about Mexico but the price of everything has soared here and I think it has done in much of the world
People are leaving Ontario and BC in Canada because they can't afford to live here.... I am so fortunate that I have an apt in a good friend's home
Could it be in part due to that???
It's crazy... I've not seen anything like it in my life before
Moving sucks.... I'm sorry that you have to go through this sweetie.... Big hug... xo
I found one in the morning but by the time I got to it, they had rented it already. In the afternoon I found another one, though, with that central feature I need--lodging on the ground floor as I can't do stairs. I'm set to talk to the landlord about it tomorrow! :-)
Then tonight, one of the sisters in the family nearby that provides me home health care joined in and said there's another one for rent at a lovely park nearby, so I'm going to check that one out for sure, too.
Things are looking up then and folks are looking out for me. By the way, arfie, thanks in particular for affirming my experience of that "gringo tax" phenomenon. I agree with your take on how to respond to it, too--accepting a new place every year. as a fact of life. Right on. It kind of fits with that Alanon advice about the wisdom of letting go.
I am grateful that the support y'all have given me here for this upheaval really worked. I don't know about y'all, but just speaking for myself one of my PTSD symptoms is that I can get triggered by change beyond my control. I had 6 flashbacks at the news yesterday, but after taking in your support and getting on with letting go and opening myself up to a new place my PTSD was consoled and I didn't a single flashback. Now that's not perfection but it sure is progress.
Support appreciated.
Today we did that with a nice place just around the corner that rents for what my original rent here was before the 1/3 increase. Super place, but the landlady scheduled for me to see it at the same time she scheduled a whole family to view it. They brought grandma, the kids, the whole clan, so I was outnumbered 8-1 and they nearly ran me over.
They seemed to be in a panic to rent right away, though, whereas I can wait all the way until my current place's rental contract runs out Sept. 5th. It got rented to the desperate family, then, and not to me, but it'll be ok. I already heard of an even cheaper place for rent closer to the super nice US-style shopping mall in town. It's got a/c so it'd literally be a cool place for me to get my walks in.
