Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) Support Group
Find support with others who have gone through a traumatic experience. Whether you have chronic or acute PTSD, we are here for you.
As I mention daily so as to receive Daily Strength to live with it, on top of having our chronic PTSD I also got diagnosed with Chronic Kidney Disease 10 years ago. It was hard to take on another chronic condition, especially since this second CKD condition was related to the first PTSD condition. A bad psychiatrist overprescribed me Seroquel for PTSD nightmares without taking into account that I'm a diabetic. The damage to my kidneys ground on until I had only 40% of my kidney function left and I collapsed on the job one day, was hospitalized, and got the bad news.
Fortunately, though 40% ain't a hundred, I can live and function on 40% of kidney function so far without dialysis. I have a lot of neuropathy pain, which y'all help me through with your support, but I didn't have to go on disability and I got to work the last 10 years to the end of my career and retire just like anyone else. That was great.
I couldn't take painkillers for neuropathy pain, though, because even aspirin goes through the kidneys. After 5 years Prazosin, which is liver processed and not kidney processed, came along for my PTSD nightmares. Until then, though, when I couldn't pop a pill into my mouth, I popped food in there for consolation instead.
I ballooned up to 350 pounds in my weight in those 5 years. When Prazosin came along, it came time to stop using food as a painkiller and lose weight for my overall health. I had bariatric surgery 4 years ago, and lost 125 pounds. Today I weighed myself, and my bathroom scales told me that I've maintained that weight now for 4 years.
I'm so grateful for your support while I literally weighed this way and that way of coping with my PTSD. I'm curious to know if anyone else among us went through managing food issues along with their PTSD.

check out that smoke ring. It tasted really good. I smothered it with Maulls BBQ sauce which is Local to St. Louis and one of the best I ever had.....

Years ago, I won a mirrored armoire from my job. It's in my bedroom but I rarely stand in front of it. Yesterday, I had to have a dexascan done so I had to change into a gown. There was a full length mirror in the changing room. I'm aware that I gained 5 to 7 pounds over the last year from cheating on Keto but I didn't know what it looked like. It was a reality check.

Thank you for this post.
As you know i have struggled with anorexia for years. i went back into treatment last fall and gained weight and have maintained this weight since.
i now eat without fear-but my body image is still poor.
My anorexia is closely tied into both childhood and adulthood trauma and i continue to work through my body image issues in therapy.
i admire you for keeping the weight off, and i pray for you that your neuropathy pain will not stop you from going on your beloved walks which are so good for your body mind and spirit.
You inspire me to love and respect my body,my friend.
Thank you.
Big supportive hug, amigo. When stressed/depressed, I don't eat, and then .... oy..... add in my midlife hormonal issues and now I can't *lose* weight! Even not eating... So that's been a major re-vamp of my dietary habits. Whee.
Youui've done amazing on your weight loss :-) FOUR years !!! THat's the kind of result doctors dream of seeing in patients, and it took YOUR work! CONGRATS!
Congratulations on maintaining your weight! That's really amazing. I know people who have had that type of surgery and lost weight but then gained it all back again.
Kidney failure is no joke, and it can make you feel pretty awful in a lot of horrible ways. I admire you for continuing to live your life and pursue happieness and meaningful connection with other people despite the difficulties you've faced and continue to face.
I know I've said this before, but if you ever want to vent about how much it sucks to have damaged kidneys, I'm more than willing to listen. I had no one to talk to about how difficult things were, so if I can offer any kind of support, I'd be honored to.
I just want to say I admire you.
As for your question, I've been an emotional eater since college; I didn't have very good coping skills and that was my go to. It still is sometimes. But I'm getting better at recognizing my moods and making healthier choices.
I think the hypervigilance has my body so wound up that I just can’t eat, I also get stomach spams when I’m super stressed.
I’m also a really small person in general, height too, that’s why I’m lilmissy lol.
But sometimes I wonder if I would have been bigger & taller had I had proper nutrition & enough to eat when I was younger
Big hugs to everyone <3
