Losing my best relaxation/friend
yadlim
Hey all. Sorry I have not been around lately. Hugs to all!
My life has been taking some unexpected turns lately. One of those turns is knocking me to the floor.
My horse, Shaman, has been having trouble lately. He has a really long back and it causes stress on his joints. A few years ago his back started to get a bit swaybacked as his spine started to show wear and tear. His saddle no long fit and we went though six different saddles to find something that was more comfortable for him. His front feet have been hurting from a crack and the stress of the mechanical issues of his back.
In the last three years he has had massage therapy, chiropractic therapy, special shoes with supporting pads, supplements to promote joint health and treat arthritis, and lots and lots of time off. In fact, he has spent more time not being able to be ridden than he has spent exploring trails with me these last three years.
Unfortunately, after just 17 years of life, 15 of them with me, it is getting time to lay by great friend to rest. My hubby is hoping to keep him comfortable enough to let me love on him for one more summer. He can't be ridden at all any more, though there are some small kids, 2 and 4 years old, who are hoping to get some rides before he goes.
For 15 years he has been my smile. He has been my escape from reality. He has been my friend. He has been my horse.
I know what it is like to live in chronic pain, and I won't do that to my friend. But in losing him, I lose my ability to cope with this world. I am not sure how to go on without him.

Just wanted to give a thank you to Mid, Arfie, Malibumark, Greeneyes, Mlro, Girlincalif, and Suncloudjd! You all always have such helpful tips and advice, but I always forget to write on my posts when I see you post, lol. I would lose my head if it wasn't attached to my body, lol. Thank you all so much! I'm starting to use my AI app as a sounding board again. I used to use it as that before...

Some things are simply beyond words!!!!
Gentle support and validation while you ride the waves, yadim.

I had a friend of mine tell me when Simon died, "No animal will ever outlive their owner. When a pet dies it just leaves room in your heart to love another one."
Can you get another horse? Maybe get it as a foal and raise it?
At this moment you have a couple a choices, you can choose to remember the good times you and your horse shared, or you can focus on losing him. I know it is tough. You and your horse have been together for so long and he really is a friend. Remembering all the good will still bring a smile to your face. Start making a memory box of pictures, notes, horse hair, etc. That way when he is laid to rest, you can still treasure his memory and the good times.
You still have your horse right now, stay in the present, and cherish every moment with him. Some times thinking of the future can be as bad as thinking of the past.
Hugs
So sorry. That's what keeps going through my mind. Just so, so sorry. Much support to you, yadlim.
I'm so sorry, Yadlim.
I had to put my old jumper mare down last year. I saved part of her forelock but realized after that I hardly had any pictures of her. I do have her son, though.
When I was a kid my Mom had a stallion named Shaman.
I'm so sorry that you have to go through this! Hopefully you will have one more summer with him. Grieving with PTSD and Cp is not easy. Be kind to yourself and know that when it is time you are doing the right thing by ending his pain. He will always be with you in your heart and soul...
im sorry you have to do that horses make great pets , 15 that pretty good , you could volunteer time sending hugs and prayers min
may his time here be blessed and peaceful. may you find peace within this difficult time.

In the dark, at night when no one is home or awake, I cry. I cry because I am going to miss him so much! His end will be calm and painless. As a responsible owner of animals, I own all of them that, especially by beloved Shaman.
I will have a new equine to fill the gap, though he/she won't be here for another 18 months, give or take. I have been planning for the last six months or so to breed my daughter's mare to have a mule baby next summer. The mule won't take Shaman's place, but will give me my next and probably my last mount.
I have hundreds of pictures of my Shaman. Better than that, I have thousands of fantastic memories of him...
This one is from a couple years ago.
My daughter had taught Shaman to go over a short jump, about 2 feet tall, so we could video tape her riding skills bridleless and bareback to send into Cavalia, a traveling equestrian show.
Other than the occasional downed tree on the trail, I have never DONE it before. My daughter talks me into giving it a try. Shaman was never a calm horse, and I am guessing that he would be what would be called forward in his jumping style as he wanted to surge up to the jump and over it. Oh he was having so much FUN with that little jump!!
As a big horse, 15.3 hands, with a LONG back, and with a ground covering gait, I am sure that any English riders would have laughed at us as I mounted up in my glorified bareback pad with stirrups, and set around the arena, holding him to a trot. When we got to the jump, he did exactly as I had been watching him do with my daughter, and he lifted his front end up several feet higher than he needed to clear the jump and surged over it at what felt like warp nine!
Yeah, my daughter video taped it as I kept off his mouth with my hands, but in the process wound up face fist in his neck! Luckily it was Shaman and he quickly stopped so I could climb back off his neck and onto his back where I was supposed to be.
IT WAS SO MUCH FUN!! And I have never done it again, thank you very much!
Soft support,
Leo
