I made a tired mistake - help?
aliceunchained87
I made a big mistake this evening because I am tired, and now I'm struggling to ask for help to fix it.
I was supposed to have two grad-school make-up final exams tomorrow (technically one and a half; I completed one portion already of the two) and I just realized I spent an hour and a half studying for an exam I have already taken. I was too exhausted to realize it until after I had spent an hour and a half doing it. My neuro issues cause me to see black floating spots and I am not at a point where I can "push" through it to study more.
I know I should email the staff and ask permission to reschedule (because this is a makeup anyways), but I feel like I have already asked for too much. These were exams I'd have taken in December and while everyone is nice because they know my neuro is recommending brain surgery, I don't want them to think I am taking advantage of them. They keep saying they know I am not, but I still have a hard time feeling any other way.
I was supposed to take the finals yesterday, but they let me move them to today due to the bad weather we are having (after I asked the school closed for the day so it wouldn't have worked anyways, lol). They had to move some of the lower classes' exams around because of the snow days so they are going to have their hands overly full tomorrow. The dean sent out an email to everyone stating the final exams for the lower level students couldn't be made up on Monday unless they could show "extreme" circumstances (and because the city has plowed and salted the roads there there's no reason for students to miss exams).
I know I am different because (1) I took the semester off for health reasons, (2) they are just makeup exams, (3) I live 60 miles away and one of the areas I have to pass through is currently in a state of emergency, and (4) I have health concerns other students might now have ... but I still feel bad asking, you know? They have already bent over backwards to help me so much and while I do still have one exam next week (the one tomorrow isn't my last one), I feel uncomfortable asking.
What should I do here? And if there is a line that can be crossed by asking for too much where is it?

I am going to try to sleep for a few hours. I'm setting an alarm so I can get up and check my email (and then study if need-be).
While I often end up doing what should be done (such as sending the email because I am in NO position to pass my exams, and I am not in physically good enough condition I should be driving in this weather), that doesn't mean I like having to do it.
Does anyone else ever feel that way?
I guess it didn't hurt that I was on the judicial affairs committee, dean's list, and in honor courses.
Still. . .
When I catch myself shoulding myself, I check my hyper-vigilance inventory. Just in case.
Gentle support while you sort your own, Alice. Good luck on your exams.
Crisis averted!
I feel so relieved because now it means I have the next few days to study (the right subject) and rest.
I helped my favorite student get her driver's license. It took her a year. She had the book memorized, but every time she went in to take the test, she bombed, even when it was given orally.
Before her coup d'etat her husband and I formed a conspiracy. The week before the test, we refused to even touch her book, no matter how she goaded. Not even her world-famous humidas (creative tamales) could move us. I grabbed her arm and took a walk with her during our tutoring session. Her husband bought her a spa date for the morning of the test.
Bingo. She didn't miss a question. Healing happens.
Still looking for the moral to that parable. Maybe "Clearing the neural pathways is more helpful than cramming more in?"
Whatever. . .
Congrats on a step well taken, Alice. Keep stepping.
Rest up:-)
