the best way to start is to get a referal from your GP. they can usually tell you who's seeing patients, and who has a good reputation, or not so good.
I don't know abour your country (Canada?) but here it's possible to do it anonymously or under a pseudonym. There are also people who specialise in diagnosing and with an official diagnosis you won't have to wait as long, in case you don't want to go to your gp with this.
Atec's suggestion is excellent. Primary care docs are good sources for a referral.
Gentle healing to you.
Welcome!
I will try to get e good therapist.
I always think I'm in control of things!
What are the real risks not taking care of this state?
I don't know if this helps but there are organizations for almost every level of professional work that specialize in unreported mental health assistance for its people.
I know there is a program for lawyers in the US to receive mental health assistance and MH referrals that are NOT reported to the ABA. They will ONLY report you if you are a threat to yourself or others; if you suffer from drinking or drug abuse they say nothing and help you get the treatment you need. I don't know what kind of profession you have but if you are worried about your MH struggle going public perhaps it is something you could look into?
Also, there are a LOT of risks going untreated when your physical health is being impacted by your mental health. If you have tachycardia you should really consider being seen somewhere. I pulled a muscle in my heart wall at the end of last year after I missed so much sleep trying to work that my muscles were getting damaged. I thought I was fine. My muscles got so fatigued that not only did I pull a muscle in my heart wall, the cartilage pulled away from my sternum on the left side of my ribs, causing one of my ribs to crack. The doctor's couldn't operate because it's a heart-related muscle and bone issue and I had no choice but to give it time and let it heal. I had to take an entire semester off of grad school to deal with this. I am 28. My doctor says I'm lucky I survived it. I could easily have broken that rib if I'd kept pushing myself and it would have damaged my heart and left lung.
I have some neurological issues which likely played into my body's response to lack of sleep, but my general response to "what could happen?" Is "you never know, and by the time you find out it's already too late."
I don't mean to sound doom-and-gloom over here but like Atec, I have a high drive and grad-school has me chasing my profession like it's going out of style. It's important to take cues from your body and your mind. Give yourself time to get help when you need it, because by the time you "need" help it might be too late. My damage was preventable. If I had gotten more rest I'd be okay now. Don't be that guy; don't be me. :P
I am glad you are here though, and I hope you are able to find positive support and acceptance here.
