I'm "new at PTSD" and it's so scary
I'm 19 and just recently (4 months ago) had to terminate an abusive relationship. It was my relationship with my stepfather who apparently emotionally and sexually abused me and slightly physically abused me too I guess for 16 years. I always knew something was wrong because I knew that starting to hurt myself at age 3 (and continuing for the rest of my life so far) in order to stop or lessen the other pains I dealth with and wanting to kill myself starting in 2nd grade wasn't normal. But I didn't know that the problem was my stepdad and that it was abuse. I always thought it was me, that I was the problem. Anyways, now that I terminated the relationship I've been diagnosed with PTSD. I keep having nightmares and flash backs, and more recently I've started to think I see my stepdad walking on the sidewalk sometimes when he's not. It's all so scary. The worst part is that I'm still just so confused because I feel like I loved him, and maybe still do, but at the same time now I realize everything he's done to me and how bad it was and how it's affected me. I'm so scared that my PTSD won't ever go away and I'll just wake up in the middle of the night to a panic attack for the rest of my life, or think I see him walking towards me on the street and feel like I'm going to faint for the rest of my life. I know it's only been a short time since I got free of my relationship with him, but i don't know, it's just all so scary. And it's only worse because I still feel like it's all my fault. I mean, if you're abused for 16 years, then maybe you deserve it. Plus I was bullied really badly for 7 years in school and in my family, so I just feel like maybe I don't deserve happiness and safety. I guess I just wonder if I'll ever feel ok, and if my PTSD will ever get better.

Which explains the mysterious fevers and my extra fatigue. I'm so glad I pushed for answers.

Like Muji, I'm from one of those families. Many of us are. SOmetimes, that sets us up to have PTSD from other traumas in life (like me, or some military veterans). Sometimes, we get functional, and then get non-functional, and just gotta keep our coping tools handy. THis group is a godsend for me, as the in-person group locally is for combat male veterans only.
Take it one small step at a time. Healing to you.
