I hope all his tests come back OK. No more surgeries and no more hospital stays. :-)
I don't think anyone really likes hospitals, so you likely have a lot of company in this same feeling. I guess I am lucky, I have had some positive experiences with the hospital, they saved my sons life when he was born, they were there for me when my own voice inside my head would not shut up and they got it to be quiet, they were there for me this last time and got me into a program I feel will help me. Yep I have had some bad experiences also, one time I was in so much pain in my back I went to the ER. The nurse took me right in, the nurse at the back ignored me, talked about me in front of me that I had the flu and made me feel awful and like I was wasting the hospital's time. It turned out to be a gall bladder attack. Once she realized it was not the flu, so was so nice and I could tell she felt like an idiot which made me feel better. lol
Anyway, hang in there Arfie, practice deep breathing, distract yourself and reach out to friends and family for support. Hugs
So year after year I've started to see better things about this place I once remembered with fear. It has really changed. The two sides in the war reconciled like South Africa reconciled after Mandela. The place has actually gotten some prosperity going. I'm admitting to myself change actually happens on rare occasion in this world.
Last summer when I went I checked into their hospital system. I'm thinking about retiring there, and I have chronic kidney disease. So I wanted to know about dialysis in this third world country.
I've got to tell you that their hospital system seems better than ours, and it's in the third world. I used to be a hospital chaplain between 2001-2010 at 2 major big city medical centers and 1 smaller hospital. I've got to tell you that even as an insider, I got to where I knew not to trust the USA's hospital system, too, like arfie says. It's not all bad, no. But it's flawed. IMO, too much money sloshing around unaccountably.
In Uruguay doctors don't make as much money as they do here, and hospitals aren't as modern, that is a fact. But the health care I needed was up to date, and in exchange for it not being as new and sophisticated, the whole system was more human. Doctors actually spent time talking to you, as did nurses. I felt like I could do dialysis there ok. That takes a lot of trust for me to say.
So sorry you're coping with this impersonal stuff from the hospital system. I can't argue it's not real, I can only validate that it is. And when you're stressed and distressed in the middle of a surgical crisis with a loved one, you don't need it. No wonder you just feel you'd rather stay away, arfie.
Hope we're a stop gap kind of support for you in this. Keep us posted as to how he's doing, and how you are, too.
Anyway I have a lot of experience in hospitals and I really don't like them either. I'm sorry your husband is sick and in a lot of pain. It's a terrible situation and I hope he feels better and recovers quickly.
Some hospitals have people who volunteer to sit with family etc., so maybe you could ask? Sometimes a stranger is actually a relief to have around at those times---no expectations of you so you can just be as messed up as you need to be, and to heck with it. I find that useful when I'm flipping out. Ican be a huge mess and there's no one expecting me to be anything else.
Prayers for you and yours.
