I had no idea what it was until I found it. I realized that I felt very uncomfortable around people who were genuine because I didn't really understand it, I gravitated towards the shallow, selfish and charismatic because that is what I knew.
I changed my dating style completely because I was so fed up with the awful relationships I ended up in and used my past experiences as a guide to what not to go for. It was really scary when I met my husband, when you're not used to having someone care for you it really takes time to get used to it.
I met my husband online and was incredibly picky about the guys I met up with. I made a list of what I was looking for in a guy and stuck to communicating with only those who had those traits. Mostly things like kind, genuine, caring, honest etc. Anyway my strategy worked and now I'm very happily married.
Like you I also got a dog and she taught me a lot really, dogs are such wonderful animals, she also seems to be a great judge of character. I remember one guy came round and she wouldn't stop barking, he seemed to be quite afraid of my little mini Daschund but when my husband came round she took to him straight away, she put her head on his lap and looked at me as if to say 'this is the one'.
Good luck Jessica, it's out there!
As for people, I can say that yes, it does exist but it is rare. I have two people in my life who love me unconditionally and many more that do not. It is a rare gift, but when you find it you will know- be it from a child, an adult or even a pet.
