Had doctor's appointment today

 I got a lot of support for my last doctor's appointment last month and did well, so I thought I'd go to today's appointment on my own.  I'm proud of myself, I did well with being handled and stuff today, without getting my PTSD too triggered by the nurses' and the doctor's touch.

I was on meds without stop from 1995 when I got my PTSD dx until 2011, but since 2011 I've had to go without any that would affect my kidneys.  That's left me with only one for nightmares, Prazosin, because it's processed by the liver instead.

No Ativan, no Xanax, etc. all to save my kidneys has been the deal, and that hasn't been an easy adjustment.  Today, though, I got the news that my kidney damage, though incurable (I only have 40% kidney function left), has stabilized because I'm doing without PTSD meds as I am. 

That was good news, because I have to work and so forth without any PTSD meds to help me.  I'm glad the effort is paying off.  The support here really helps take the place of my former meds, too, so thought I'd share the good news with my thanks to all here who've given me support for all these years now.

It is great to hear that you are making progress. Even the smallest thing, like attending a doctor's appointment, which people can take for granted, is progress, a positive step in the right direction. I am sorry to hear that you have been dealing with PTSD for so long. I was diagnosed in December of 2015. So, I understand those small steps and feeling proud of any progress. Triggers are hard and are always there. We have our good days and our not so good days. I think I posted yesterday about almost having a panic attack and I used to be a Social Worker and Therapist. So, I am definitely experiencing role reversal and am both counseling myself by taking small steps and by talking to a therapist, too. It is awesome and reassuring to hear that you are dealing with PTSD, anxiety, etc. without relying on medication. It gives up hope because meds are a crutch until we can function in an optimal manner on our own via healthy coping skills that don't include medication. Be proud of yourself and I hope you continue to make more progress. I am sorry to hear about your kidney problems. That is another stressor you have to contend with. but it sounds like you are on your way. Thanks for sharing and I hope you make and share more progress:)

Riley, thanks for your sharing, too. I understand what you mean about role reversal. I was a hospital chaplain from 2003-2010, one of my jobs was working the ER of a medical center in Chicago. Lots of gun shot wound cases, trauma patient after trauma patient. So this is role reversal here for me, too, definitely.
