I only remembered the sexual abuse about 3 years ago and was not able to deal with the eating disorder until I had mostly healed the abuse. There is so much retraining that needs to be done to heal an eating disorder and there was no way I could do that AND deal with everything from the abuse and the emotionally abusive home I grew up in. Food was also my coping mechanism and to remove the coping mechanism before I healed from what I was coping with was impossible for me. I finally had to let go and allow myself to put the food issues on the back burner.
I am now working on healing the bulimia and it is not easy. It's also no where near as hard as it was to heal from the abuse and my family. But it is still difficult.
Take care
The only thing that stopped my ED behavior was going into the hospital for treatment. Then, once I halted the actual behavior I could go into deeper reasons why, etc. and work on that.
i've never purged, because i never ate enough to have anything to purge. did that for 8-9 months. i think it's still kind of a taboo subject for men to admit, but i don't care about taboo. just saying you're not alone in this.
so....things i have found that helped me through were a) medication (and not pill-pushing. i've had awful reactions to meds. it's love-hate with me) b) therapy. for me, because it was combat-type ptsd, the EMDR therapy worked with CBT.
jeez...sorry to write a novel. guess what i'm saying is that when a problem gets too big for me alone, i get outside help, and it's saved me. literally.
