I just heard the coolest podcast interview with Sir Patrick Stewart, the actor who played Capt. Picard on on Star Trek: The Next Generation. (Yeah, I confess, I'm a Trekkie).

It was on Marc Maron's podcast, and it turned out it was ALL ABOUT PTSD. Stewart's dad had it from WWII, but was untreated for it, so there was a lot of domestic violence in Stewart's home growing up.

As an adult, he went through the same therapy we go through here, and now he works with groups teaching about PTSD and recovery. How about that?!

Oh, and by the way, be ready for Marc Maron to start the show off with some foul language. Sorry about that. But once the interview starts, that's it. Just wanted to prepare you for that.

I love when he says about his father, "It was very difficult to be around him." Just so perfect and expressive and succinct. and "It left him marked for life". And that it led Patrick Stewart to find a sort of context and sympathy, and he talks about so much about the shame and humiliation, I felt so much of that too!

And when he talked about acting as "being someone other than himself", that's exactly how I am about writing.

Thank you for posting this! I admit, I'm a big Trekkie myself (can't decide if I like The Next Generation or Voyager best, TNG has Picard but also Wesley Crusher, urgh) but I had no idea about Sir Patrick Steward's history with PTSD. This was really interesting and inspiring!

Glad you liked it. I've got a long time friend who is just now starting therapy about her lifelong PTSD from childhood. I just sent the link to her. I think it'll encourage her that as adults we can still heal, you know? Like Patrick Stewart talks about doing.

Haven't listened yet but wanted to chime in that I'm a Trekkie too!

I agree with Leonard when he answered Sheldon's question of which was the better Star Trek.... "Original series over Next Generation but Picard over Kirk".

Chris Pine played an awesome Kirk though! Eye Candy! :-) Well, for us women anyway...

Yeah, Chris Pine was good casting for a young, dashing Kirk. I go with Picard as the best Star Trek captain, though. I'm a sucker for that British sense of authority, I guess. I was really surprised by Patrick Stewart's revelation that he was a PTSD survivor in the podcast interview, but guess what else? He revealed he never went to college, and still became this big Shakespearean actor in addition to his Star Trek roles. Really inspiring how he overcame PTSD and being less educated than his fellow Shakespearean actors to make it. I really respect him all the more.

    Once again I've had a fever today. I'm not going to the hospital because that's a huge waste of time but I did schedule a dr appointment for Wednesday afternoon.
