Anxious - Doctor's Appointment Tomorrow (TW)
aliceunchained87
Hey everybody,
I'm freaking out in my head over here and I know I have no reason to be but that isn't stopping me (HA! Isn't that the story of my life, lol).
I almost died at the end of last year after I was given a common anesthetic for a routine procedure. The anesthetic was sprayed down my throat and I ended up in the emergency room less than 48 hours later because my throat had completely closed and I nearly choked to death trying to drink water.
I have to go see an allergist tomorrow because they need to find out which anesthetics I am allergic to. Something in the mix set me off but I need a wisdom tooth removed (which will require oral surgery because the tooth is melded to my jaw), and the oral surgeon won't touch me until he knows what he can give me.
I was told to book four hours because anesthetics testing is different than normal allergy testing; they give you a diluted dose of the anesthetic, if you are okay, then a medium dose, and a full dose. If you fail the test they stop that anesthetic and move to the next one.
The oral surgeon gave me two samples but the allergist said I'm going to be tested for six or seven. Because I had such a bad reaction last year they required a code blue to be in place for my visit tomorrow and I was told to pack an overnight bag just in case.
I know they know what they are doing but last year nearly killed me (literally). It required surgery to fix all the problems that were supposed to be routinely handled, my blood oxygen content required me to be kept in the hospital longer than it should have, and the reaction led to a lung infection and heart issues. I am still dealing with those heart issues.
While I know they know what they are doing, I also realize they are going to give me everything individually that was in the cocktail that set me off and that makes me nervous. I know I have nothing to fear because whatever it is is going to be diluted, but the thought of them purposefully injecting me with what nearly literally killed me in November has me running scared.
I need sleep and my mind won't shut down. This fear is irrational, and I know that, but I seriously wasn't sure I'd survive the surgery I was forced to have. My odds a week before surgery were 35/65 (not in my favor) and the doctor managed to get me closer to 50/50 the day of the surgery, but the hospital actually made me write out a will I was so sick.
I am 28. It scared me shitless because I have a daughter at home who is only six.
Whatever it was that caused all of that, is getting injected in my system tomorrow.
I'm going to stop typing because I am reaching novel length, but if you could spare some positive words or prayers I could really use them today and into tomorrow.

Upon his departure, he remarked, "I am in many people’s pockets; no one will believe you." Have you ever grappled with the silence that follows sexual assault, where the perceived impossibility of being believed necessitates self-censorship?

Wishing you luck, and a success with the first drug they try !
They found out which anesthetic it was, and I discovered that of the five they tested I can safely take four!
I had a reaction to the "bad" one the moment it went under my skin. The dot was so small at the time I didn't even realize it was a positive reaction until the nurse was measuring the redness.
Unfortunately that tiny amount caused me to have to stay there for six hours instead of four because I got ridiculously itchy (from just the tiny prick!). They wanted to make sure it didn't cause me to break out in hives (I got some red patches on my leg despite the test being on an arm).
I am glad though I now know what I should be avoiding and what safe options I can actually take. I am still gross and itchy but it should go away by tomorrow.
No eppi-pen needed and no trip to the hospital. Thank God!
