Okay... I know I need to change doctors or quit therapy all together ... but I keep going back each week and not doing anything about it.
Two weeks ago my therapist told me that I was depressed. I agreed but said that "it's more than depression." We went round and round and he told me that I'd been living my life in a fog... blah, blah, blah ... and then challenged me to "look up depression and diagnos myself." I think I'd ticked him off.
So, I did. I took a "depression test" online and scored mildly depressed. It suggested that I sleep more, eat healthy, work out, etc. Then I looked up PTSD and almost ALL of the symptoms fit.
When I met with my therapist two days ago (on Monday). I told him I thought I had PTSD and he said, "Okay, so you might have a little "PTSD." Then he started talking about shell shock and other war related things ... but then came around to say that "recently it has been linked to childhood sexual and physical trauma."
I checked his speciality areas, he treats all sorts of depression but PTSD isn't listed.
Is there such a thing as "a little bit of PTSD?"

I'm trying to exercise daily. I was doing fairly well until I sprained my ankle 2 weeks ago but now I'm getting back on the horse. Today I walked over a mile with my arm weights that are about 22lbs total. I was out of shape and it was hard on my arms. I also did my 30 situps. I'm also going to drink a lot of water and try to eat healthy. I do tend to have a sweet tooth but I'm cutting...

Seems to me, he is thinking PTSD is all war-related...and NO it is NOT "just recently" been related to SA, Physical/Emotional Abuse, etc.
What is HE thinking??
I think HE needs to go look up PTSD.
PTSD is ANXIETY based.
If you have depression, and one can have it...it's a Separate diagnosis, separate entity from PTSD.
I believe it is HARD to find a good therapist to treat PTSD. He doesn't sound qualified to treat PTSD at ALL. Plus, he is too dang catty.
I would dump HIM....but don't give up on therapy! There ARE better therapists out there...just might take some time to find a great one.
Here's a few places to find therapists:
1st: EMDR.com
--left off the www b/c it comes up funky. Search on their website for a therapist. B/C those that are trained to do EMDR, should most likely be trained in Trauma therapy, since EMDR is a trauma therapy.
2. www.sidran.org
Call or Email them for trauma therapist...be sure to check junk folder...mine went there.
go to NAMI.ORG, There you can look up the actuall diagnostic criteria for PTSD and any other mental illness. Keep looking for the help you need. You and you family will have a happier life if you are getting PROPER treatment.
there is a spectrum, like any illness... but no matter what degree. . . "mild to severe" you still need treatment and someone who knows HOW to treat it... my opinion anyway.. oh, depression comes with the territory!
