I just got a phone call from my old high school friend down here in Uruguay. We were going to get together this afternoon, but he's had to cancel. His step mom just died today.

Grief happens everywhere and at any time, huh? I teach Kubler Ross's Death and Dying book to nursing students at my community college 5 times a year. But it's never so real as when death touches your own family or friends.

I'll be seeing my friend in a couple of days, once the funeral has passed.

Thanks, everybody. It threw me for a loop for half of the day, but I'm regaining my footing now. For the last week in my trip I had been reminiscing with my friends over old school pictures from high school. The future, though, is that at 57 years of age my peers and I are now at the age where we're going to be burying our parents.

sorry man. that's rough. hope your friend's okay.

i went through the stages recently....still am, probably. not nice. awful. i guess the only thing to take away is to appreciate how ephemeral existence really is on this rock.

You are so right about death's true meaning once it has touched your life you truly understand it.

It is a little like mental illness in that respect, one cannot understand me until they have walked a mile in my shoes. Walked the path of PTSD littered with unwanted memories what haunt your every move.

I am glad your friend has you there at his time of need. Your wisdom and comfort with the subject of death will no doubt help him with his grief.

Due to my increased paranoia, anxiety, and a panic attack over the weekend, my psychiatrist has put me back in a full dose of Zyprexa until further notice. Every time I think I'm getting ahead something happens and it's back to square one. I knew he was gonna do this but I can't help feeling disappointed. It is what it is.
