In 1959, I started school under the "Retarded" label. That was a politically correct label back then. Midway through 3rd grade I started in a new school with a teacher who took one look at me and said, "Retarded, my eye." She proceeded to do things that are illegal in today's schools. In my case, it worked. In 5th grade I became the first girl in the state's gifted math and science program. The gift was math and science. The politics blew me away!!!!! It wasn't long before I was crying, "I liked it better as a retard!"
