I know several friends who use this method.
It is a bit easier on the knuckles. If you put it at the right hieght you could try kick boxing.
Talking to the therapist to find the roots of the rage would be helpful. I do know that EMDR can bring up rage and formerly suppressed feeling though, so that could have alot to do with it.
Take care.
I used to suffer rage and used all sorts of methods to try and calm myself, the best way I found to bring myself down was to write (it doesn't matter how much paper you screw up cause the more you screw up, tare up or throw the more you calm yourself). Another therapy you could try for anger is accupuncture - it may sound strange but it released an amount of anger in me once when I tried it
well, I just had a serious issue with anger. last week I had a breakthrough in counseling about something I didn't understand about myself. it made me feel really better, and I went home feeling good. next morning I woke up and wanted to kill everyone in my way. I hate being angry and here I was being angrier than hell.
stayed all day, next day even worse....third day, I wanted to start smashing stuff. I never hurt myself, but I sure love to smash things!. however I didn't this time. I held it in, still trying to figure out why I would be so angry. next day, I woke up so violent I didn't know what to do. I was litterally gritting my teeth and screaming I just want to kill someone!
I picked up the phone and left a message for my counselor. said, I know this isn't my counseling day, but if you don't hurry and call me when you can, I'm gonna blow..I'm seriously angry.
he called back within a couple of hours, and said what's happening. I told him, and he said he expected me to get angry after everything we touched in counseling. but he didn't expect me to get violent. I said well I feel violent but I haven't done anything.
he talked to me for awhile, and said, If you can't stay calmer, call me again.
told me what I had to do, processing that sent me into shock. then I had a funeral the next day, and it was like I WAS DEAD.
and I cried through the whole thing..
yesterday I was seriously depressed and just vegged all day. and today I woke up in a decent mood, and I go to counseling this afternoon.
Now I know that doesn't tell you what to do, but it sure does tell you how FAST one can get that angry, and YES, I did not have a clue why just like you.
which is irritating by itself. it's like WHYYYYYYYYY!
so we'll talk today, and see what's going on, and if things are getting resolved.
hope you feel better knowing someone else gets just as angry. and oh, by the way, when I was younger, I used to punch walls and smash everything in the damn house. one time I hit a brick wall and broke my wrist, in three places. wasn't fun, and definately not worth it.
so ya, I have done stuff like that in the past. I learned not to do that anymore. more fun, smashing shit anyway.

I'm going to be trying EMDR soon, but in the mean time I'm trying to calm myself down by meditation and positive thinking. I'm happy to say that I haven't cut myself in over a month.
I know you can't stop and do those things if you are having flash anger, but you could always get a punching bag and try those as therapy to prevent flash anger. That's what I do. I don't have flash anger anymore where I get physical so now I can work on the verbal.
