For me, those are the hardest and the things that trigger me the most, the overall theme of stuff being out of my control. No surprises there, right?
The feeling I get when I watched that story and similar ones lately is that it really shakes my faith in humanity. The PTSD creates a sense of the world being an unsafe place to live; the news tends to make that worse because it primarily focuses on the evidence that perhaps the world has gone mad. I bet it affects the emotional health of all people, but for people with trauma histories, it hits us harder.
I agree, it is hard to not feel worried and depressed in reaction to news stories so eventually it becomes necessary to shut it off.
The only thing I really can control about it is my focus. I do the same with movies and tv that are supposedly "entertaining"; I am never entertained by abusive scenarios.
It can be hard not to focus on stuff because part of the PTSD is the increased sensitivity to potential danger. This may have served us (and sometimes still could), but taken to the extreme it can actually harm us (with you siezures, with me migraines).
Again, I am very sorry you are going through this. I hope you can get some relief from it soon.
