Just finished watching "The Homesman" where Hillary Swank plays a 19th century frontier spinster who volunteers to take 3 wives who have suffered psychotic breaks under the stresses of frontier life to a mission in Iowa. She recruits Tommy Lee Jones to help. The movie got me thinking about how much treatment of the mentally ill has changed in the past 200 years. It has changed allot since my first therapy encounter in 1972.
No one I know is doubting that we still have a long way to go, but. . . Whacha think? Have the changes that have occurred since the Pioneer Days been for the better?
