Just finished watching "The Homesman" where Hillary Swank plays a 19th century frontier spinster who volunteers to take 3 wives who have suffered psychotic breaks under the stresses of frontier life to a mission in Iowa. She recruits Tommy Lee Jones to help. The movie got me thinking about how much treatment of the mentally ill has changed in the past 200 years. It has changed allot since my first therapy encounter in 1972.

No one I know is doubting that we still have a long way to go, but. . . Whacha think? Have the changes that have occurred since the Pioneer Days been for the better?

I think so. Progress over perfection.

I was very mad when her Hilary Swank's awesome character gave up the ghost and Tommy Lee Jones got to be the sole star of the movie. Wish things would've changed a little more in that respect.

Things have changed for the better. The science and the medications have improved vastly. And I think a lot of the taboos regarding mental illness have gone by the wayside. The thing that needs to be improved on is treating us as individuals and not labels. My DOT Recert. is a good example. They don't want to give it to me because I take Lithium and Xanax, small doses of both. I have had a clean driving record for almost 30 years. I have never in my life called out of work. But because these meds are in a little book, then the above means nothing. Oh well, some things you can't fix.

Bluntly put, I have not seen the film, but having studied the psychological treatment (and lack thereof) for women in particular during the 19th and early 20th centuries? I'm occasionally appalled by how some of the social stigmas remain intact in some form after 150 years, despite improvements in other areas.

That said, they used to lobotomize and sterilize as "mental health treatment", so yeah, I much prefer the modern era!
