I have had life saving surgery several times, and one time they didn't think I would be waking up again. 'Then a good part of the healing is from all the intrusive stuff that is done to you by the docs and the medical procedures. My reaction at present is a little bit the opposite to yours - I think I'd rather die than to be a hospital patient ever again. ...But we are both reacting (at least in part) to health issues and hospitals.
I am so sorry you are feeling so strung out about this. Thank you for speaking up here and sharing the weight of this you are currently carrying. Please keep posting, because you are welcome here.
Have you ever had counseling to help you with trauma caused by your health issues? Lots of folks w/ PTSD have hospital issues.
The best to you.
Re: Self soothing there are definitely a lot of things and there are big posts here all the time. Try viewing some of the past discussion threads and see if you can find what you need. Also I hope your other posters here might list some some stuff for you. Right now I'm digging out of the flu and feel real exhausted.
Thank you for joining us, and I'm glad you feel good w/ us.
TC40, letitbe3 sounds like she's put a good course of action out there. I worked in hospitals as a chaplain from 2001-2010, and as much as they help, they are intense, intense places. My own PTSD helped me relate to patients in order to help them, but I got triggered a lot myself, too. I'm happy with what I do now.
Welcome.
Knew you had serious spine issue, didn't realize it was your neck. You are extremely fortunate in having your surgeon, and to be living in an area where so much excellent medical knowledge is available.
Please know some of us here will be with you in spirit next time you have to ride the surgery resiliency train.
I don't have anyone either, alone with broken body, internal injuries, more. But I have some good friends. I also call the 211 operator when I'm down and need somebody to talk to and don't feel like boring my friends. Do you have a therapist to help you through this? Family sometimes is great, sometimes makes things worse. A good therapist is neutral, caring, and can help you with this trauma.
I wish you all the best, and I am sending you great big thoughts of healing, solace and renewal. I'll be checking on you. Your situation requires caring and love. That'll help. I am also sending you a Big Hug, one of those hold you till you feel better hugs, knowing there's someone who truly cares. We all care here. I care. Let me know if I can help in any other way.
