Some missionaries have mentioned Kenya as being a place where the temp is 72-74 degrees year round. Ha! But I don't intend to migrate. LOL. I don't sweat, either, Barbsieanne, which makes it that much harder to tolerate heat. I have noticed that I am becoming more and more heat intolerant. Glad you mentioned it, or I might not have associated it with DM. I find that the sunscreen also hold in the heat a little bit. My father in law often says "Nuthin' ain't easy. He could be right. ;-)

I feel like Jennie in that my body's thermostate is broken. And as a few others, I don't sweat easily. Instead, I feel like I'm going to explode whenever I go outside in the heat. Often I have to get a wash cloth and soak it in cold water, to put on my face. I hate the sun and heat, because I feel miserable and it drains me, too. Just makes you want to say, Grrrrr!

i am dreading our summer, i was too sick and only just diagnosed last summer. I was a sun worshiper until a few years ago (maybe that was my trigger, who knows?), but now even the winter sun irritates me. We have very hot summers(110-115 degrees) with 98% humidity, so i am savoring the cool winter right now.

Thank you all for your comments....great to know that I am not alone in this!!!! Sorry though that you all suffer in the same way as me!!! I too am always cold all the time...drives my hubby crazy!!! Even now I am laying in bed with a blanket and comforter on me!!! I know it is raining and cooler outside than usual for a July day but still that is just thd way I am!!! Always cold!!!! Can't handle air-conditioning!!! I too have always been a sun seeker...love it!!! Boy does DM ever cramp my style in more ways than not!!!!

Going by the general consensus here... Looks like heat-intolerance is shared by all. One if the wonderful things about this group is we can see it's "not just me" & "it's not in my head".

My Dr. told me that heat activates your immune system and it si bad for anyone with Autoimmune Diseases. I get worse. If I am outside for very long my pain increases and and I can feel myself start to swell...like a balloon. But, I also know that I am much weaker and my body is working much harder to do simple tasks. I break a sweat and have to rest halfway through making my bed for God's sake. UGH!!! And the dishwasher...I might as well be running a marathon..plus I'm huffing and puffing. Who needs the gym and PT - just do house chores!! lol

It was so interesting to read these comments about the heat and regulating temperature. I also have a problem with the heat, do not sweat properly and get very cold in air conditioning. I was just diagnosed a few weeks ago with DM and Raynauds, but I have had this problem with temperature all my life. I also notice the swelling when in the heat, not just the sun. I like epsom salt baths for aches and pains but if the water is too hot it causes more swelling, so I let it cool down and take a room temperature or cool bath and that feels nice. I get better information from all of your experiences than from medical articles if find on line about DM. Thank you all for sharing.

The odd thing is that because I can't get my temp regulated, I keep my thermostat low at night 68-70, but have my electric blanket inturn on and off at night. If I make the air in the house any warmer and do away with the electric blanket, I'm too hot. If I turn the air down and don't use the electric blanket... I freeze. So cold in the house and electric blanket it is... It's bizarre!

Jenny I can so relate to that....just can't win!! I can mope cope in air conditioning!!! Frustratates my hubby so much!!! I have a blanket with me in the car so I can keep warm!!! We don't have air in the house but it is nice and cool in here but even if it wasn't I would still have a blanket on me!! I can't stay in thd basement very long because it is just too cold down there for me!!! On thd other hand thd heat is a killer too!!! If we could only keep things in the 70's I think would be great...prob not!!!! Lol

I have got pm and i find that when it is hot it is more difficult to get around because my muscles have to work harder to do what they are supposed to do. It is very easy to become tired in hot weather and i find that when i am wiped out i suffer for the following couple of days with pains all over my body all i can do is rest.

OH it is so good to hear that these symptoms aren't just me! My head just drips with sweat! I'm a teacher and I fear the kids are going to remember me as "that sweaty 3rd grade teacher". I also get chills and feels feverish, though my temp never registers above 97. Such a bizarre disease.
When 1st diagnosed with DM, the dermatologist cautioned me against being out in sunlight without extreme sublock use and always a hat. He cautioned me about even the 'ambient light" (like I'm in the shade) can be a problem when my skin is flaring. I've for a long time that I've become a vampire b/c it's just not worth the hassle to go out in the sunlight. Plus I despise HOT summer weather. It's comforting to know it's the DM disease process and not just me.
