Polymyositis & Dermatomyositis Support Group
Polymyositis (PM) is a type of chronic inflammation of the muscles (inflammatory myopathy) related to dermatomyositis and inclusion body myositis. The inflammation is predominantly of the endomysium in polymyositis, whereas dermatomyositis is characterized by primarily perimysial inflammation.
I know there have been several posts about this type of problem lately but I wanted to post my particular problem and see if anyone had any advice.
Just to bring everyone up to speed, I was diagnosed with DM in Aug '10. Before my diagnosis, one of my problems was that I could not drive for long periods of time. It was like concentrating on one thing for too long (like the road) made my very dizzy, disoriented, and sometimes feeling like I was going to pass out. I have never mentioned this to my rheumatologist because by the time I GOT a diagnosis and saw her, so many other problems were so much worse.
Well, I started a new job yesterday which requires a lot of attention to detail. At the end of my day (I work 8:00am-1:00pm each day) I find myself feeling a lot like I did back when I would drive for too long. Dizzy & disoriented. I am very scared about what this means. I am on 2.5 mg of Prednisone and I know others have said Prednisone can cause this type of feeling but I also had this before my diagnosis when I wasnt even on any steroid.
Should I call my rheumatologist about this? I just saw her last week. I'm sure she is gonna say "why didnt she mention this before" but honestly, its just starting this job yesterday that is bringing a lot of this back. I'm scared that I wont be able to keep this job and help support my family. It is a good paying job with good hours. I do feel that they didnt adequately explain just how detail oriented the job was though. The job has a lot more responsibility than I was led to believe. But again, the pay and hours are good. I just dont know what to do. Any advice? Thanks. -Angie

Remember the learning curve is steep starting a new job and it will be easier when you get familiar with the tasks. I wish you the best, shawna
I am sure there is stress and being Moverwhelmed at a new job that is detailed oriented. I would give it a try and see how you feel. Maybe have an open dialogue with the mgr if it still is hard and maybe they can shift the job duties as they like you and you have worked hard.
