Polymyositis (PM) is a type of chronic inflammation of the muscles (inflammatory myopathy) related to dermatomyositis and inclusion body myositis. The inflammation is predominantly of the endomysium in polymyositis, whereas dermatomyositis is characterized by primarily perimysial inflammation.
I have an understanding that was set up between myself and my eye doctor. If I need to go up on prednisone or any med that increases eye pressure, I can make an immediate appointment to go in for a five minute pressure check. I simply tell the girl at the front desk that I need a fast, pressure check that is less than five minutes and they always squeeze me in between appointments. If the doctor is away in surgery, then I set something up with the walk-in Saturday "emergency" appointments at another location.
It is so important to set something up with the eye doctor for surprise situations. I also have procedures in place when the rheumatologist is closed after hours or holidays in case of a health problem. Plan B is so necessary!
It is also important to consider having a good supply of meds in stock when you know the weather is going to be bad, or a holiday is approaching.
Eye issues, particularly glaucoma pressure or any DM problem can happen on weekends, holidays, and the most inconvenient times. I have talked to so many people on this site where the emergency room is needed because something happens on a holiday. The only way to avoid a possible big expense is to have procedures that you set up with your doctors for the "what if" situation. If you need to still use an emergency room, then at least you can explain to the insurance company that you tried to plan ahead.
I always tried to make my doctor appointments after work if possible and this was helpful to my employer.
I totally understand your dilemma of how inconvenient this disease plays into normal activities. Just do your best to plan ahead and be proactive in your planning. Good Luck!
