Hi Angie, I am also having some issues with gallbladder from the results of a CT scan. I had general anesthesia from an upper & lower GI procedure. I had no difficulties. I have had trouble with anesthesia in the past too. I hope you procedure will go well and I wish you a fast recovery. Good Luck

Two years ago I had surgery to repair my broken leg/knee, and to have a plate put in. I was on low-dose prednisone at the time (5 mg.), but they upped it to 10 mg. temporarily. They did not use general anesthesia, because of the possibility of paralyzing my other vocal cord. So they gave me a spinal. All went well, although it took extra time to heal. My prayers are with you.

Angie, tell the anesthesiollogist how you reacted last time, it may change their game plan to help prevent those symptoms. You will have a much better idea how you are doing when it is all done and a distant memory. I will be thinking about you. Best of luck,

Hi Angie - As a nurse who has worked in both surgery and recovery room, I have to agree with Shawna and others recommendation to talk to the anaesthesiologist. They have a number of options available to them. Your particular health issues and your bad reaction to previous surgery is all taken into account when deciding on the anaesthesia regimen for you. No one can promise a smooth reocovery, but they will try to keep it as smooth as possible for you. Trust me: the doctors really want you to have a good anaesthesia and recovery.
Is there someone who can be with you before and after your surgery? Be assured that prayers are being said in your behalf.

I had the laproscopic gall bladder surgery when I was 17. If you would like to know anything about the surgery at all don't hesitate to ask. I will give all the details.

Having similar concerns about my up coming surgery to remove the brain tumor. They are taking me off all meds for it. The slow healing is also something I am concerned about. Please keep us updated on how you are doing and know you are in our thoughts and prayers.

I am sorry you have to have surgery. I know how scary that is. I am not a nurse but I recommend you don't go off your medications...especially without help from your doctor. These medications can't just be stopped. I would call your doctor and discuss your medications and what to do about them. My guess is you stay on them same as always.

When I had surgery, I couldn't take my Prednisone that day because I had an empty stomach. They game it to me in my IV. That was great because I didn't have to go without and I didn't need to trty to take it on an empty stomach. I understand they often give Prednisone during surgery anyway. But do talk to your surgeon and make sure you get it.

As far as your problems with anethesia, I have had so many surgeries with different experiences with coming out of the anesthesia. I agree with the others to discuss it with your anesthesiologist. They don't want you sick either. They will come up with the right combination to help you. You can also get an anti-nasea in your IV. I've done that too.

Good luck with your surgery. I'm sure it will go fine. My sister had her gallbladder out and said it was the best thing either. She was in terrible pain before the surgery.

I definitely plan to discuss my problems with general anesthesia in the past with the anesthesiologist. Hopefully he can make a nice cocktail that wont mess me with me too much after the surgery.

I have only been on the Methotrexate 3 weeks and havent really gotten back on a regular regimen of the Prednisone since doing a quick taper when the docs thought that my stomach issues were possibly from an ulcer. I imagine thats why they are not too concerned about me stopping the meds for the surgery. I dont like what not being on anything for a few weeks may do for my myositis but I hate the idea of not healing well or developing an infection even more. Stopping the methotrexate was on the advice of my rheumy.

Hopefully I will heal nicely and can get back on the meds soon. I see the doctor within 14 days after the surgery and the rheumy said if he thought all was looking good, I could start the meds again. I actually see my rheumatologist on the 28th so I hope and pray that the surgery helps my pain and digestion issues and we can get going back on an aggressive treatment for the DM soon.

Angie, Thoughts and prayers are with you. Most people feel disoriented for several hours to a day following general anesthesia as the drug is still in your system. The feeling sick problem is a concern as nausea during anesthesia is a concern to the doctors too. I am also, like several other comments here, wondering why you are to go off your meds? I have had several operations now(4 surgeries, plus approximately 7 general anesthesia procedures done) and have always been told to take my meds all the time up to procedure ( except aspirin) . I dont know why some of us have docs who tell us to go off our meds and some who dont. I guess it is the doctors preference and experience that dictate it. I am going to call my rheumy again tomorrow because as I listened to the message her nurse left me again, she didnt mention going off the steroid (which I havent been on regularly in weeks anyway) just the methotrexate for a few weeks. I am only to take 10 mg of Prednisone daily for now anyway so it isnt a high dose. I will clarify whether I am to stop both or just the Mtx.

I would sure feel better if you talk to your doctor again. Be sure to briefly go over your medications you are currently taking and make sure your Rheumy is clear what they want you to do. Stopping 10 mg of Prednisone suddenly is a big jump. I am not sure why you aren't taking it regularly. You need to take it regularly to see any benefit. As far at the Metho, that shouldn't mess with surgery at all. Because it is already in your body, there doesn't seem to be a benefit in my opinion. Plus it takes 6-8 weeks to see any benefit from it.

But you and your doctor know best. As long as you are comfortable with the plan and can handle going off the drugs, that is what counts.

You are in my thoughts and prayers for Tuesday! I am glad you are talking to your doc on your meds and the anestheologist. It will all go well and you will be feeling better soon now knowing the gb was part of the problem.
