Any Supplements for Hhair Thinning/falling out
Cadolph
My hair is looking like straw these days. It's getting thinner and is falling out due to the medication I'm on. I'm currently on 30 mg of prednisone and tapering and 100 mg of Imuran. I'm not tapering on the Imuran and am not sure what my doctor has in mind for me on this one. I won't be seeing my doctor until late October.
Has anyone had any success with any vitamin supplements or hair products that help strengthen hair?

I have been taking Bioten an over the counter vitamin and it has helped. Been taking it for about six months.

When I was on methotrexate, my doc told me to take folic acid to prevent side effects. I loved what it did for my hair and nails, so I keep taking it even though I haven't taken mtx for several years. Folic acid is one ingredient in prenatal vitamins to prevent neural tube defects, and my rheumy says it's ok for me to stay on it.

My hair dresser told me there is a product she will be getting that helps repair hair specifically damaged by medication. I didn't get any info because she didn't have it yet. If you go to a salon they might have it. I tried to google it but couldn't find anything.

I think a good healthy diet also helps. And every few appointments, I get my hair "glazed" which gives it a super shiny appearance.

Mine was falling out really bad in the spring then stopped but has started again. I bought a product called Nioxin. It is a pepermint shampoo and conditioner with a treatment liquid that you put on when you are done washing and conditioning. The pepermint stimulates the folicles of the hair, it kind of burns and it does turn your face skin red for a while if you drip but it worked for me. The whole texture of my hair has changed as well, it used to be course now it is fine AND CURLY!

My hair got VERY dry and thin from Methotrexate pills some time last year. I was not told about Folic Acid. So I switched to Imuran, which I couldn't tolerate, and it did the same thing to my hair. The end of March I started Methotrexate weekly injections. Twelve hours after the injection I take 3 small Leukovorin pills which prevent any side effects. I also take Folic Acid daily. My hair has improved so much! It has become thicker and is soft and wavy again--like it was all my life. Nioxin shampoo and conditioner are supposed to help thinning hair. I've been using it for years, but when the meds caused the problems, it didn't help. I had also tried Rogain for women, which did me no good. Wish you the best. I know how frustrating this can be! Thanks everyone for your comments and tips. I think I will try some vitamin supplements like Biotin & folate. I do already eat healthy. I'll also try some hair products. I suppose I could look into hair clips or something like that if it got really bad. It might be kind of fun.
