Oksay I was diagnosed with pcos about 5 years ago, and from what I have read that its affects mostly overweight women and women who have problems with insulin. I am just trying to understand how I got affected with PCOS. I am overweight but I do not have insulin problems nor do I have diabetes or an family history of PCOS. My sister who is bigger than me does not have PCOS which makes me confused. Also my RE told me that if a lost some weight my cycles may start to regulate and possibly one day conceive. How is that other overweight women do not suffer from PCOS but others do? (I think in my case its just bad luck!)

i wish there was an answer, i have no insulin problems or diabetes or any other medical history(noone in the family either) and i've allways been underweight (less than 40 kg sometimes), but same diagnose PCOS. My mum started blaming herself at some point and it took a lot of persvasion that it has no connection with anything or anyone, it just happends. bad luck, like you said. i've had it since 2001 and find it very hard to understand how little research is done into it. sorry if i didn't make you feel any better, but i really don't get it either...xxx

The way it was explained to me was that some of the eggs in the ovaries don't mature completely, becoming a cyst on the ovary. And since the egg doesn't mature and break away from the ovary to go to the uterus--the uterus doesn't respond by shedding, thus no period. This is basically caused by an inbalance in the hormones: estrogen,progestrone, and insulin(yes, insulin is a hormone). My doctor told me in most cases she's seen it was a case of too much estrogen. read 'some reading about pcos' and 'Origins and evolution of the Western diet '' the second one is quite long and an actual research paper but it is very informative about the role diet plays on diseases like pcos.

Hi,
It seems that PCOS CAUSES weight gain . My sister is also bigger than me & doesnt have pcos either . There's a theory
that PCOS is related to diabetes, but everyone is different.
Still a lot of research to do on the subject !!

You also need to be careful of misdiagnosis. You can have cysts on your ovaries and fertility problems without actually having PCOS. Doctors are crazy.
