Yes you should call your DR...it sounds like there is something else going on.

You should see your doctor. I had the exact same thing happen to me about six years ago. I hadn't had a cycle for over a year and then started passing large, heavy clots and I was bleeding very heavily with cramping. I couldn't change my tampon quick enough and had to "double up" and also use a pad. I ended up going to the emergency room. At that time I hadn't been going to a gynecologist and wasn't yet diagnosed with PCOS. I was sent to one and was immediately ordered to get an endometrial biopsy to make sure I didn't have endometrial cancer. In my case it was just my endometrial lining finally shedding, as it had been building up that whole year I went without a cycle.
Please see a doctor to address this. I'm finally going to a great doctor who really understands PCOS.

There are several reasons why they do an endometrial biopsy, mine was primarily to check for cancer. Other reasons include to try to find the cause of irregular bleeding and to see if the uterus is going through the normal changes. My endometrial biopsy was a very quick procedure where my doctor took tissue samples using a device inserted into my uterus. It was uncomfortable because my uterus would spasm and cramp when the samples were taken. The pain only lasted a few moments, but I had mild cramping for a little while afterwards. I also had mild spotting throughout the day. You may want talk to your doctor about taking ibuprofen or acetaminophen before the procedure to reduce cramping, but not asprin because it will thin your blood and cause you to bleed more.
If your doctor doesn't order a biopsy s/he may put you on a medication to force a period. It may simply be that only part of your uterus lining is shedding at a time and not the entire lining. Forcing a period with medication will allow it all to shed and that may help start to regulate your cycles. At one time, my doctor also put me on a low dose birth control so that I would cause me to have a period so that it would lessen the chance of me developing ovarian cysts (low dose due to regular birth control elevating my blood pressure).

Well I had to call around to a couple different offices to get an appointment. One place could not see me until March & the nurse said that if I went to the ER & got a referral from the ER then I could be seen sooner. So I called my insurance company & got another place to call & they can see me this Thursday!!

The first place said that since I was not clotting today and it was not as heavy then I should be ok. I said to her, "WTH I have been bleeding for almost 3 months, is that not serious enough", thats when she said the ER thing!!!!

I am so happy you got an appointment! It's obvious the first place wasn't for you!! A two month wait is ridiculous!! Sometimes it's a little suspicious how the medical community is so close knit and it seems like sometimes they are working for each other instead of working for us..thier patients. Don't get me started on insurance companies..LOL. Well, now you can get this bleeding under control and start working towards PCOS managment. I wish you the very best! Keep us up to date, please.

Ok, so my doctors appointment went ok. I did have an endometrial biopsy today. Monday I am having a vaginal ultrasound & lab work done. Now I just have to wait for the results!!

i have had the same thing happen several times. It is not unusual to bleed that long after not having a period for a long time. A normal person sheds their uterin lining every month, but for us it just keeps building up. thats what the clots are. It does however put us at much higher risk for developing endometriosal cancer. I wouldn't worry too much about it though. If I were you, I would ask about getting a ten day cycle of provera every few months to induce a period. this keeps your lining from getting built up too badly. I will warn you though that the provera has some very uncomfortable side effects for some (myself included). And also, Nobody told me this when I started it, but the bleeding is extremely heavy. I thought I might be hemoraging the first time I did it. I literally could not move without making a mess. But instead of periods that lasted for months on end like the ones I was used to. It only lasted about 4 days. Sorry so long. Hope this makes you feel a bit better. Good luck!
