I've had the same issues. I started Metformin almost 2 years ago and hated the side effects. A few months ago, my doctor told me to try it again. I take the XR (Extended Release). Week 1 at 500mg was tough, but week two at 1000 mg was unbearable and my doctor told me to stay at 500mg. I'm still taking 500mg a day right before bed. If your doctor is okay with it, maybe a lower dose would help.
Also, I know people who have just endured the side effects for the fist three weeks and then they were fine. I just couldn't take being sick to my stomach for 3 weeks. I'm not that tough!
I hope this was helpful. I wish you all the best:)
