Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD) Support Group
Polycystic kidney disease (PKD) is a progressive, genetic disorder of the kidneys. It occurs in humans and other organisms. PKD is characterised by the presence of multiple cysts (polycystic) in both kidneys. The disease can also damage the liver, pancreas and rarely the heart and brain.
I suppose if the kidney came from a person who had PKD but did not yet exhibit cysts it could happen. however, a person with PKD does not cause a transplanted kidney to become cystic.
you could just ignore this (preferably) or if it really bothers you, ask where the coordinator learned this.
RNs very often function in roles that are not direct patient care.
as to transplanted kidneys developing cysts, that is something I didn't know, thanks Lin for clearing that up. that still doesn't mean that cysts migrate from a PKD patient to a transplanted kidney.
There has been discussion about including some minimally cystic kidneys among the extended criteria organs. Given the option between no kidney or a fully functioning, normal sized cystic kidney, some patients may chose one with PKD (since it is a long-term disease). I do not know if any decision has been made about including some cystic kidneys to the extended criteria organs, but there has been discussion about it. I would presume that patients who are offered such a kidney would be told that the kidney has PKD and, as with all organs, given the option to accept or decline the organ.
Bottom line: No, your transplant cannot "catch" PKD, period.
PS My transplant coordinator knows virtually nothing about kidneys. Because my listing will be for a dual liver and kidney transplant, she is a liver coordinator (the primary listing) and her knowlege of kidneys is woefully deficient (e.g. she told me once I'm listed I'll need bloodwork to be done "about every other month"). It's going to be a long education process to ensure she keeps up on all the requirements for both the liver and kidney listing requirements (I'll need to meet and keep in contact with a kidney coordinator to ensure I know everything that needs to be done for the kidney listiing gets done and submitted on time)!
