Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD) Support Group
Polycystic kidney disease (PKD) is a progressive, genetic disorder of the kidneys. It occurs in humans and other organisms. PKD is characterised by the presence of multiple cysts (polycystic) in both kidneys. The disease can also damage the liver, pancreas and rarely the heart and brain.
caffeine should definitely be cut back but not necessarily removed entirely. I choose to drink one cup a day because without it there would be nothing to get out of bed for. those who don't need that lift should do as Norma suggests.
in my case reducing coffee to one cup daily went a long way in reducing painful breast cysts so it definitely contributes to cysts. however, we try to do everything in moderation. better to eliminate cola and other caffeinated soft drinks which do nothing but supply caffeine and phosphorous, plus lots of sugar and/or artificial sweeteners, none of which benefit anyone, much less those with PKD.
Yes, I quite coffee for years and years, but recently I may have half of a weak cup in the mornings... AFTER a large tumbler of water, and some lemon juice.... That's about my only vice, other than being cranky, hahahaha!
Good to hear from you. As you say, there are sacrifices to be made with PKD, but it's difficult to give up absolutely everything that's not entirely good for you. My vice is a hot chocolate in the middle of the day - something to perk me up a bit. I suppose I'll end up giving that up as well eventually, but it's my remaining treat at the moment.
Good luck with the surgery.

My condolences for the passing of your sister. I Hope your surgery goes well and you do not suffer from much pain. I am curious, about the hernias. Are they related condition of PKD similar to increase risk of mitro valve prolapse or kidney stones? Or are the hernias caused by the cysts applying pressure to other organs and parts of the abdomen? Take care.
