Polycystic kidney disease (PKD) is a progressive, genetic disorder of the kidneys. It occurs in humans and other organisms. PKD is characterised by the presence of multiple cysts (polycystic) in both kidneys. The disease can also damage the liver, pancreas and rarely the heart and brain.
I'm currently at about 38 gfr. I was in the hospital in Dec. with chest pain, but my heart tested fine. Then a couple of weeks ago, I was in bed with excruciating flank pain, on Percocet for 5 days of 24/7 pain. My nephrologist wasn't available at the time, so I had to see someone else in the practice who didn't really seem to care that much. I finally saw my neph yesterday and he believes that what happened in Dec. & a few weeks ago are linked, that I had a renal infarction, which means my heart is involved, too.
I'm pretty tough, but this news yesterday really scared me. Does anyone know anything about this, or have had this happen to them? I'd appreciate any input anyone can give me.
(I also have MS & diabetes--genetic, I'm not overweight)

I found this article on renal infarction. It talks about patients with atrial
Fibrillation are at risk. You said your heart was ok. I recently had an episode of atrial fib., and now I take blood thinner meds.
Let us know what your nephrologist plans on doing.
I sympathize with you and I agree about it being scary.

It's possible that a renal artery is blocked by something other than an embolism (originating from the heart). I wonder whether a stone or large cyst could do this? Imaging studies should help to clarify.
