Polycystic kidney disease (PKD) is a progressive, genetic disorder of the kidneys. It occurs in humans and other organisms. PKD is characterised by the presence of multiple cysts (polycystic) in both kidneys. The disease can also damage the liver, pancreas and rarely the heart and brain.

I was told that because of my PKD that I should lower my calcium but I didn't really understand what that meant.

I know your body needs calcium so I don't think that means to avoid it at all.

Does anyone have any suggestions for me?

I don't really drink milk very often. Just with cereal in the morning. And I'm not a fan of ice cream. I do eat a lot of yogurt though.

Is this ok for me?

I have a bit of a dliemma with calcium. I have osteopenia (sort of early osteoporosis - lots of risk factors so I was sent for a bone scan). the radiographer recommmended calcium supplements, but I know that too much calcium is bad for the kidneys, so asked my GP what I should do. Blood tests show normal calcium levels, so she said do nothing extra, otherwise the kidneys will take up the extra calcium. I just about have the recommended amount of calcium for my age in my diet. Cheese would be good if it weren't salty and bad for the BP. I'd love further information, too!

Are you taking calcium tablets?

I know that calcium tablets are taken when on dialysis to bind with the phosphorus as dialysis does not eliminate phosphorus.

The only reason to eliminate calcium supplement is if you have too much it does not secrete from the body and sits in the blood stream which I believe calcifies which is not good. Maybe that is what the doctor meant to say.

Also please note there are different calcium supplements that the body digests better than others. Google calcium supplements and find out.

Otherwise ask the doctor why he is recommending to lower it.
