Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD) Support Group
Polycystic kidney disease (PKD) is a progressive, genetic disorder of the kidneys. It occurs in humans and other organisms. PKD is characterised by the presence of multiple cysts (polycystic) in both kidneys. The disease can also damage the liver, pancreas and rarely the heart and brain.
do you have a Nephrologist?
My kidneys are huge, as is my liver. This causes a great deal of pressure in the abdomen and on other organs. My stomach is squashed so I can’t eat large meals. Snacking is advised instead. Avoid tight waist bands and belts as they make things significantly worse and try not to bend over, bending the knees instead. Bending over squashes everything in the abdomen even more. Fizzy drinks can cause bloating so don’t drink them if you want to prevent more problems.
Sometimes things do move around a bit. I can have pressure in one spot one day and another the next. I find that going for walks can help move things back into a better position. You may find that any gas is felt more, too, and this gives the feeling of something moving. You may also feel cysts expanding which can be odd. I have learnt to identify the discomfort and pain associated with the liver expanding in particular.
Sleeping can be a problem. If on my back I put a pillow under my knees, and on my side the pillow goes under the belly and between the knees. This takes pressure off your back and for me reduces the dragging feeling of the heavy organs pulling sideways or squashing downwards.
I hope you find some relief.
