Polycystic kidney disease (PKD) is a progressive, genetic disorder of the kidneys. It occurs in humans and other organisms. PKD is characterised by the presence of multiple cysts (polycystic) in both kidneys. The disease can also damage the liver, pancreas and rarely the heart and brain.

Pregnancy &PKD

So I will either have a egg donor or PGD done for my second pregnancy. Can anyone share with me their pregnancy experience? Does Kidney function decline post pregnancy. I am 30 years old, good kidney functions with Mild hypertension.


I have a child who is 3 years old and had an uneventful pregnancy and no loss in Kidney function although I was 3 years younger.

I wasn't diagnosed until my kids were aged 6 and 8 so wasn't monitored particulary closely during my pregnancies. My BP was fine for both but my kidneys/liver did grow, especially with the second. As you already have mild hypertension, this will need to be monitored very carefully. Good luck!

I gave birth to my first baby 4 and a 1/2 months ago. I underwent IVF combined with PGD to prevent passing the disease on.
I developed pre eclampsia at the end of my pregnancy and the decision was made to induce me but I was already overdue at this stage.
Post giving birth my blood pressure remained high and I had to take bp meds to control it. I stayed on the meds and was slowly weaned off which took 3 months. I just saw my nephrologist last week and we have concluded that I probably have received some permanent kidney damage as a result of the pregnancy. He feels my kidneys may repair themselves slightly but will not return to where they were prior to pregnancy.
As you will, make sure you are monitoring your bp and kidney function regularly and if you see early signs of impact on kidneys discuss the possibility of early induction. It was about 3 weeks before my due date that my kidney function appeared to be off and I wish I had thought to discuss this then as would have made no difference to the baby but may have limited the damage to my kidneys.
Having said all of this, I am 10 years older than you and I think this makes a big difference. Good luck with everything and if you need to know anything more about PGD, I be happy to share my experience.
