Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD) Support Group
Polycystic kidney disease (PKD) is a progressive, genetic disorder of the kidneys. It occurs in humans and other organisms. PKD is characterised by the presence of multiple cysts (polycystic) in both kidneys. The disease can also damage the liver, pancreas and rarely the heart and brain.
High potassium levels usually come from having poor kidney function, as the kidneys regulate potassium levels in the body. If not working properly, they cannot filter out excess potassium. It may therefore be possible that your husband's kidney function is quite low. There are other causes related to blood loss, diabetes, dehydration. There can also be faults with the blood test, so it may be repeated to check.
Potassium levels of 7 or above are usually a medical emergency because there is a severe risk of cardiac events. Your husband's doctors will want to lower his levels quickly. In the meantime, avoid potassium rich foods. My potassium levels went up some time ago and I adjusted my diet (which it turned out was very potassium rich) and my levels have remained normal since.
