Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD) Support Group
Polycystic kidney disease (PKD) is a progressive, genetic disorder of the kidneys. It occurs in humans and other organisms. PKD is characterised by the presence of multiple cysts (polycystic) in both kidneys. The disease can also damage the liver, pancreas and rarely the heart and brain.
I have acid reflux, largely owing to the fact that my massively enlarged liver is sitting on my stomach, I think. If your son's kidneys are very enlarged, they may be having the same effect, but anyone can suffer acid reflux, fo various reasons. If it is a long term problem, gastroscopy may be indicated to check that there is no bleeding anywhere.
I was taken off Omeprazole as it is not very kidney friendly. I didn't find it helpful anyway. I've been told to use ranitidine by that doesn't work either. I just basically put up with it now. Avoid spicy foods, alcohol and large meals as these things make it worse. I've accepted that with so much pressure on my stomach, this is something else I have to live with. No medications are going to help. Things may be different for your son, depending on the cause. Has he seen a Gastroenterologist? This is the best consultant for advice.
