Polycystic kidney disease (PKD) is a progressive, genetic disorder of the kidneys. It occurs in humans and other organisms. PKD is characterised by the presence of multiple cysts (polycystic) in both kidneys. The disease can also damage the liver, pancreas and rarely the heart and brain.
you don't say who you work for but I wonder if it is a state or county org. if so they don't view you as an individual and can't make changes in policy so don't take it personally.
do whatever you can to go back to work, request light duty if they have such a thing.
use your skills as a social worker to investigate your options, look into the Americans with Disabilities org. to see what you can do. good luck.

I don't want to rub salt in the wound but my employers (RBS) are fantastic despite what you may read in the media. I have 12 months leave at full pay then a further 4-4.5 years at 55% so at this moment when i have plenty other worries none of them are financial. I know employers in the uk are just as tough as those in US but I'm pretty sure in the healthcare sector they will receive a similar sickness allowance to mine. Some of us don't realise how good we have it.
So so sorry that you have this to deal with on top of everything else - don't know what else to say- Just try to stay mentally strong and don't let this get you down.
