Polycystic kidney disease (PKD) is a progressive, genetic disorder of the kidneys. It occurs in humans and other organisms. PKD is characterised by the presence of multiple cysts (polycystic) in both kidneys. The disease can also damage the liver, pancreas and rarely the heart and brain.

I am so saddened that after 7 years with my employer, when it came down to it, they have no loyalty. I have been a social worker with the seriously mentally ill for 7 years and have always loved my job. I even loved it up until the minute I left on medical leave in August. Today is my last day of FMLA (protected leave) and my last day in my position is 12/20. If I cannot return full time by 1/17/12 then I no longer have a job. And my employer benefits run out 12/31/11. I will not be well enough to return to work. I am so saddened by losing this job and the lack of loyalty. I can reapply later, but lose my pay and seniority.
What is wrong with this picture?

employers expect loyalty but are not good at giving it back.
you don't say who you work for but I wonder if it is a state or county org. if so they don't view you as an individual and can't make changes in policy so don't take it personally.
do whatever you can to go back to work, request light duty if they have such a thing.
use your skills as a social worker to investigate your options, look into the Americans with Disabilities org. to see what you can do. good luck.

Aw, Jenny, I'm so sad to hear that. True, there is no employer loyalty anymore. We're all just numbers, and we can easily be replaced, in their eyes. And generally with someone less experienced, aka cheaper.

I am gobsmacked with the way you are being treated especially in such a specialised field. Does your experience not count for anything. How much training would they have to do to replace you????

I don't want to rub salt in the wound but my employers (RBS) are fantastic despite what you may read in the media. I have 12 months leave at full pay then a further 4-4.5 years at 55% so at this moment when i have plenty other worries none of them are financial. I know employers in the uk are just as tough as those in US but I'm pretty sure in the healthcare sector they will receive a similar sickness allowance to mine. Some of us don't realise how good we have it.
So so sorry that you have this to deal with on top of everything else - don't know what else to say- Just try to stay mentally strong and don't let this get you down.
