Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD) Support Group
Polycystic kidney disease (PKD) is a progressive, genetic disorder of the kidneys. It occurs in humans and other organisms. PKD is characterised by the presence of multiple cysts (polycystic) in both kidneys. The disease can also damage the liver, pancreas and rarely the heart and brain.
The appointment with the specialist will give you an opportunity to ask any questions you may have. Write them down in advance as it's hard to remember everything. It's also good to take someone with you for support and in case you forget what was said. Blood tests should be done to check kidney function and anything else that is thought necessary eg full blood count. You may also have a urine test. Your blood pressure should also be checked as it is important that this doesn't become too high. You will be asked about family history as PKD is a genetic disease. This may be PKD, or it may possibly be another disease causing cysts on the kidneys. Your specialist may or may not give you advice; they vary!
Ask us any questions you may have and we'll do our best to help.

Waiting is difficult. Fear of the unknown can be harder than knowing all the facts. However, try not to anticipate too much. Pre-living every moment of our lives doubles the agonies and often it's not as bad as we fear so we suffer unnecessarily. The two weeks will give you time to think of your questions and be well prepared. Keep in touch with us,
