Polycystic kidney disease (PKD) is a progressive, genetic disorder of the kidneys. It occurs in humans and other organisms. PKD is characterised by the presence of multiple cysts (polycystic) in both kidneys. The disease can also damage the liver, pancreas and rarely the heart and brain.

Kidney Commercials

I was just wondering why there isn't any kidney disease commercials when there are diabetic, cancer, heart, etc. Lots and lots of people have kidney diseases yet no one is aware of it, such as ours (PKD). Don't get me wrong I think those other diseases should have commercials to raise money but we need some too. Does anybody know why or have a theory?

Strange that there aren't any commercials for kidney disease where you are from. We do have then in Canada, but you don't see them as often as other diseases.

I imagine kidney disease probably shows less commercials as it gets less funding. It may be common but still not as common as diabetes, cancer and heart disease. People tend to donate money to causes they can relate to.

That is a really good point. I'm going to write PKD.org and ask what we can do. I have made a 1000 Recycle Life pins to sit at the Drivers License division once a month and hand out to those renewing their license. I would be happy to send anyone some. Please let me know. I think it is our duty to educate people on donating, even being a live donor. The pins will be done in about three weeks.

Perhaps it's because there isn't really any money to be made? It seems that's the only reason for most ads....

Like CHeather said, there is no money to be made unfortunately, there is no cure, so what would they advertise?

But you are obviously referring to advertising targeted to create awareness about the disease, and not to sell anything.

I continue questioning if the % of the population that has PKD is anywere near the one that PKD Foundation claims. Average Joe has never heard of PKD. As many of you know have said, even many physicians don't even know much about it. If it was really a 1 in 1,000 (I have even read about estimates of being close to 1 in 500), TV would pay more attention to it.
