Polycystic kidney disease (PKD) is a progressive, genetic disorder of the kidneys. It occurs in humans and other organisms. PKD is characterised by the presence of multiple cysts (polycystic) in both kidneys. The disease can also damage the liver, pancreas and rarely the heart and brain.

Juvenile Osteoporosis

Hello. I just wanted to post on here that one possible outcome of ADPKD is juvenile osteoporosis. My son and I both have PKD and as a young guy he had 13 broken bones before this was discovered by the Dr's (it is very rare). The treatment is increased vitamin D. Just thought I would post this so we could share symptoms. Oh, his calcium loss is due to Hyper-parathyroidism secondary to PKD. Also, both of us are hard of hearing because your cochlea and your kidneys are formed at the same time gestationally (no joke).

I never heard of that before, welcome to the group though, and thanks for sharing. That might be useful information for the people here with children.

This was a good article that may explain it better than I can. PKD is systemic and can just affect us in different ways. They say that you can't compare yourself even to relatives because it can present in different ways for all of us.

As kidney disease advances, PTH levels can rise. This causes calcium to be taken from the bones and can kead to renal bone disease. I have heard of some kidney diseases being associated with hearing/ear problems, but not PKD. There's a lot we still don't know about this disease.
