Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD) Support Group
Polycystic kidney disease (PKD) is a progressive, genetic disorder of the kidneys. It occurs in humans and other organisms. PKD is characterised by the presence of multiple cysts (polycystic) in both kidneys. The disease can also damage the liver, pancreas and rarely the heart and brain.
I know it's hard to not get consumed with this ugly disease, I'm having ups and downs on the daily, but I try and stay busy because otherwise I get sad and honestly pissed off that this is happening. I try and keep reminding myself that no matter who you are or what life gives you its important to enjoy every moment that you can.
Welcome to the group. PKD is a disease which is made much worse by fear. For most people, the anxiety is about things which won't happen to them. What a waste of time and energy. Remind yourself that your fears are just thoughts, not facts. It helps me to do that. So far your scan is clear. You can have these every few years for continuing reassurance. I have opted not to have a brain scan: ignorance is bliss for me in this instance. If I develop symptoms, I will seek help quickly. In most cases, even if someone has a brain anuerysm, it is either deemed to be minimal risk or can be successfully treated, so I do not worry unduly about the possibility. It's still quite rare, even in the PKD population. As Live2tell says, your progression can't necessarily be predicted from your family history.
Concentrate on facts and things over which you have control. At the moment, you know that you have no sign of an anuerysm. Be reassured by this and put thoughts of it out of your mind. Focus on living healthily to preserve kidney function, as these are the things which are in your control. You are not your mother. Don't live your life imagining the worst, but strive for the best possible.
I'm not sure what caused me to be a lot less anxious now, but here are some ideas: For starters, I had to face my fears and get my heart and such checked out by a doctor. That was reassuring. I also had to eventually get in a car and take long trips. Surviving that helped me realize I'm not going to just suddenly die anytime I'm in a car. Right when the anxiety was at its worst I got a really great job and then that summer I was able to travel a ton and mark things off of my do-to list. Maybe you have unfinished business you want to do? I think it helped me.
Best wishes.
my mom didn't really go to the dr like she should have. so i make sure to do that. and also keep my blood pressure in check.
The fact of the matter is you're not alone. You're not the first and won't be the last. Focus on what kind can do to make healthy choices every day. And if you believe in God or any form of religious diety, work on you're relationship with it.
Fears of something you can't control compound the issues and accelerate the rate it will happen in some cases. Focus on things you can control.
