My mom had six kids and three of us have it. Her father had two kids and one got it. We don't know about this generation because only two of four (between the three PKDers) have been tested, so far we're at 50% with them too.

my mother had 4 children and all were affected.
all in my and my brother's family who were tested are affected.

In my family 3 out of 4 of us children had it. I myself have 2 children and they both have it as well.

My father was the only one in his family that tested postive but he did have a sister who died young for a brain anuerysm who was never tested. So potentially 2 out of 3 sibs there.

My father had the PKD gene, myself and all of my siblings have it, so there goes the 50% theory. I have had four children, and all four of them have PKD. Where is the 50% theory in my family? Anyone??

It's the math of dominant genes. Each child has a 50% chance of getting the dominant trait. It's like flipping a coin, you have a 50% chance of getting heads and a 50% chance of getting tails. That doesn't mean the heads and tails will alternate, you might get a whole string of heads. That, my friends, is what they call the luck of the draw (mixing my metaphors, but, I hope I explained it).

I'm a first generation mutant, so have no family history. I'll wait and see regarding my two boys. I have one good news story though. I have a friend whose mother had PKD, and neither she nor her brother has it. For that family, the disease ends there.

There is a definite difference in type I and type II. The monthly eletter came out today from the PKD foundation, it goes into this in detail also a few words of the non-benefits of limiting protein with PKD. Read it folks.. If you don't get it, I will post it for all of you to read or you could go to the PKD site and sign up to get it, it's very informative.

In my family my mum and her sister had it but 2 brothers didn't. My aunty's 3 children are over 40 and non have nay signs of it. Both myself and my sister have it but my bother doesn't (my sister has very mild version). My sister's children are 16 and 23 and not showing any signs on scans or issues wheres both my daughters were diagnosed by scan at 15 & 17.

Hi Norma67 Do you know if the same family can have different types i,e type 1 & type 11 as we appear to ll have different?

Among my siblings 2 of 3 have the disease. My mom and her siblings: 2 of 3 have the disease. My uncle: 2 of 2 have the disease. At present there are 15 children who do not know whether or not they have PKD. Praying that it stops with me, and that my children don't have it.

Julie, re your question about different types in families, yes it would seem tho there are factors that may influence the onset of problems.
in my family a brother had a transplant in his 40s, one in his late 50s, my sister was on dialysis at 39. my kidneys failed in my early 60s.
all my sibs were alcoholics, 2 smoked and my sister had a drug problem besides.
maybe this can't be repeated too often but PKD is different in everyone, even members of the same family.

I am pretty sure i am a spontaneous mutant! Adopted as an infant and located birth mother some years back... No known history of pkd on her side and father unknown but always a possibility.
