Mine were 15.8 pounds. I know because they weighed them!

size is not the only criteria. some with very large kidneys never have them removed.
in my case my kidneys were not all that big but after my transplant I was still having frequent infections. that's why I had them removed.
we are all different.

I can't really comment on the weight of the kidneys af nephrectomy because my op is not until end of October but I will update then. I am really hoping they will be really heavy orelse I have problems. My worry is that I am only 5ft 4 and am 13 stone in weight. I have to buy size 18-20 (UK) topsif not maternity but prior to all my problems starting about 7 years ago - long after I was diagnosed I was a size 10-12, and I only eat 1 bowl of breakfast cereal a day. My weight can fluctuate overnight by about 7lbs (give or take) but in general I stay the same weight and have been from a few years now. My dietician is trying to get me to put cream and butter on everything I eat as my bloods show nutritional problems. Sometimes when I go for my bi monthly check ups I see other consultants I have not met before and they try to tell me to cut down on calories!!!!!- I am having problems breathing and my last lung function test was 67% and the same consultant told me to go to the gym and do some exercise. I was really upset by this at the time and my depression kicked in again. No wonder other people think we're fat when consultants can't even understand this issue. My belly is rock solid- I can't pinch an inch.

did you mean 1 bowl of cereal a day is your total food intake? that is ludicrous and can lead to serious malnutrition. I hope I was wrong in the way I read that.
a diet should be balanced, fruit and veggies, whole grains, protein and fat are all necessary for good health. good health will mean healthier kidneys.

I too agree with spiderwoman, eating only one bowl of cereal a day will cause you nutritional issues, no doubt about that one! It could be part of the problems you are experiencing so much with PKD. Eating a balanced diet it more important than much of anything. Think twice about what you are doing to your body. You could at the very least eat tiny amounts of food that your body needs through out the day, it is called "grazing" by people in the PKD community.

Yes I deo only eat 1 bowl of cereal a day and I know this is having an effect on my body and regularly see a dietician and psychologist because of this. I really do not have any room and struggle with the cereal. I have intestinal bleeding, problems with an overrative digestive system etc etc. I too struggle finding foods I want to eat. I can't dace anything warm any more and the only thing I could really amange as extra snacks was peanut butter sandwiches, but of course this is not good for potassium levels. I can;t bring myself to eat- I know this sounds wierd if you are not suffering in this way but all foods make me feel sick most of the time. Once I eat - even if it's only a samll amount I get severe pain in my upper back which causes me problems at work so it is a fine balancing act to avoid this. I eat the bowl of cereal at night when my family are having dinner and I usually add rasperries and blackberries to it with a small pot of fromage frais on top. Please dont jusge me on this as I ahve struggled with this for more than 2 years. I know it is not helping my condition

rogerid, We are not judging you, rather offering advise. You are more than aware that eating as you are is not doing you any good, so why are you doing it. You have a family you have told us about, don't you think that they deserve to have you around for a good long time, transplant, or whatever comes your way. Your not going to be in good enough physical condition to have anything done if you continue on the way that you are. Our body needs nutrition and you know that. It affects the way we think, the way we write, it affects everything in our daily lives. Please try to eat better for your family and for yourself. Lastly because of all of us, we all care about you!!

Thanks Norma. I do know you are right and have tried various different ways to overcome this. My marriage went through a really tough time recently because my husband felt that I was deliberately avoiding 'proper' food. I have taken my husband with me to the nephrologist and they have explained to him that this is a medical symptom due to pain and intestinal bleeding and also a psychological issue due to lack of interest in food. The ensure drinks were good as I had these for almost two years so didn't need to even think about food but with the 'ammonia taste' kicking in I began to be sick everytime I had one. My nutritional status is one of the reasons nephrectomy was being planned and I am hoping after my operation my eating habits will change considerably although I know I will be on restricted diet. I will do mys best to eat as healthily as possible. Thanks again fr your concern and advice
