Getting married with PKD with a reliable insurance

jennamairecoppinger
My fiance and I are wanting to get married sooner rather than later. The problem so far is if we get married now I could loose my SSI depending on how much he makes AND how much we will make once it becomes "combined income."
I am also on medicaid but I don't know how marriage will effect that. If someone could please tell me more about other possible insurance options please let me know so I can get married without having to worry about loosing certain benefits.
Thanks :)

I'm not on SSI but I've been trying to get it for a few years now and kept getting denied so far, if you don't mind me asking how exactly did you get approved? Was it strictly for your PKD or was there other conditions as well?

My mother was the one who got me on SSI as a young child. It may have had to do with the fact the she was a single mom and our government seems more lenient on women than a man which I think is a bunch of nonsense I think both sexes should get equal treatment. I do think it was only for my PKD and kept me on SSI through out the years because I keep developing more problems that come with the ADPKD

I see, I've been applying based on a few different conditions that I have but haven't had any luck yet. This time though I have hope, as I've appealed and got denied again, but I'm currently waiting to see a judge to hear me case, and hopefully that will get me approved. I've even gone through the trouble of getting a lawyer in hopes of bettering my chances, even though he will be getting a percentage of my initial winning unfortunately. This has been quite the hassle, I first applied when I was 18, and 5 years later I'm still going through this.

If your a young child and haven't had a kidney transplant yet on top of being deathly ill...which was my case when I was 3. I think going and talking to your judge about your condition my be your best bet. I really sorry that your having such awful luck

Are you saying you had a kidney transplant at 3 years old? That sounds pretty scary, it's horrible you had to go through that.

My mistake. They found out I was sick when I was 3 but I was transplanted until 16 which is also when I was put on dialysis.

I see, it's good that it was found quite early at least though, mine was found at 16 and I believe that was more so an accident because they were looking for something else. I still remember that day, it was very eye opening to say the least... It's horrible that you or I or anyone else have to go through it though still.

Congratulations on your upcoming wedding! I don't think marriage will affect your SSI, but it may efect your Medicaid depending on income and if your husband has group coverage available for you through your insurance. As far as I know, SSI or disability is automatic if you have kidney failure and need dialysis.
