Polycystic kidney disease (PKD) is a progressive, genetic disorder of the kidneys. It occurs in humans and other organisms. PKD is characterised by the presence of multiple cysts (polycystic) in both kidneys. The disease can also damage the liver, pancreas and rarely the heart and brain.

Hi guys, I just double checked with my sister about the method and she assures me I am right. It was put into the pertineal lining and pumped out the next morning, if not sooner. It was two huge bags of fluid, so she couldn't possible have walked around the next day with all that fluid in
her. She also verifed with me the other type that people use during the daytime. It is only used for 3hrs. during the day and pumped out. tons of
people use this method, I went to a couple of her classes with her, just to be informed so I could help her if needed. The machine that pumps the fluid in and out is a computer and we needed to know the in's and out's of that. Maybe there is another type of peritneal dialysis that I'am not aware of.

Does your sister have trouble sleeping at night hooked up to the machine? Can she move around?

Hi Lisa, the answer is no, she had no problem sleeping and yes, she can move around. her son had it hooked up with a long tube so she could get to the bathroom and back. Your more than welcome.

Probably the biggest issue my sister had with the PD, was that she would get everything hooked up and night, after washing and making sure everything was sterile. Get into bed, turn the machine on and call me. Want to know why? Because she was hungry and wanted me to come down and fix her scrambled eggs and toast!! LOL. I did it a couple times and after that told her she better get more organized! Bless her heart, she did this all alone and was 69 when she started PD. I stayed with her the first couple nights, but after that we could see that it wasn't going to be a problem and if there was a problem, I was only a hop, skip and a jump away from her house.

Norma, it certainly is helpful, having real life stories about the details of this. It won't be long until I find out more for myself. Probably in spring, if things go as scheduled, as far as my kidney deterioration is going. I think that learning about it beforehand is helping me to accept it.

One thing I learned, somewhere, is that being that dextrose is in the solution that draws out the impurities from the blood, that you could gain some fat in the abdomen. This is an issue I am dealing with, because I have been a bit of a health nut about diet, not eating sugar. But that is being balanced out by the amazing fact that they have discovered and developed this system of using another part of your body to cleanse your blood, rather than having to use a machine. How amazing?

I always have had a fairly flat abdomen, until this last year as the kidneys are filling up, and I haven't been getting the exercise I need. I need to discipline myself in that area, not just so I can wear my pants, but because I think exercise and the circulation that comes from it is so important for overall well being.

I did go through my closet and have two bags of pants and clothing to take to the Good Will.
