Polycystic kidney disease (PKD) is a progressive, genetic disorder of the kidneys. It occurs in humans and other organisms. PKD is characterised by the presence of multiple cysts (polycystic) in both kidneys. The disease can also damage the liver, pancreas and rarely the heart and brain.

I am new to the group.
I am 21 and a few days ago i was officially diagnosed with PKD.
My mother and i always new it was a possibility but after years of scans, my mother and i both thought i was in the clear and got the lucky end of the genetic pool.
This past year i decided that i was going to start getting my feet wet in my medical career and get a phlebotomy degree. I was hired in a plasma center, long hours on my feet bad diet and never going to the bathroom when i needed to.
So that meant that i was getting many awful UTIs, and never thought anything of it other than i needed to take better care of myself. I also only took one round of antibiotics in this whole time.
I also decided to get off of my birth control, and move in with my long term boyfriend. After a few months of UTIs non stop again, i had this stabbing pain in my upper left abdomen. I went to the hospital and they said it was a UTI, i was in the hospital for 5 days straight with them trying to get my fevers and other symptoms under control. They sent me home with antibiotics and ibuprofen to control the pain. The hospital did not give me the diagnosis, i went home and aganized for 2 weeks. I was crying everyday and went back to the hospital. Only for them to admit me. I was told the next morning that i had PKD and that the hospital since 2013.
The hospital then went on to tell me that i had an infected cyst and that it was antibiotic resistant, and they dont understand how it became antibiotic resistant.
Is it common for cyst to get infected? is it common for them to become antibiotic resistant?
My treatment is ok i have an iv in my arm until i am un-infected and they are hoping that iv antibiotics will work. Please help i am lost and confused and need help with changing my life not to aggravate my pkd

Welcome to the group. I'm sorry that you have this diagnosis and it seems that you did not learn that you have the disease in a very sympathetic manner. Unfortunately that ssems to be quite common.
I have not knowingly had an infected cyst, but have read about the treatment and stored it as useful information to have for reference. It is often difficult for antibiotics to reach cysts if they are the type that are isolated sacs not connected to or communicating with the urinary tract system in any way. It can therefore be difficult to treat cyst infections. Some antibiotics can penetrate the cysts but require extended treatment times to be successful (6 weeks is suggested). The British Medical Association's latest advice is as follows:
Quinolones - 1st choice
Trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole - 2nd choice for good cyst penetration
Chloramphenicol - for special cases
If the treatment does not work, there is the option of percutaneous or surgical drainage.

Cephalosporins, penicillin derivatives and aminoglycerides are also used.
I noted that you did not mention how cyst infection was diagnosed. Diagnosis usually involves scans and I'm wondering whether you have had complete diagnostic procedures.

I have UTIs 2-3 times a year. I thought mine were what a UTI was like but when I explain my symptoms to a doctor they seem surprised. It feels like an electric current travelling up my body from my kidneys. Don't know what that is but so far the antibiotics they give me work.

I was yet again hospitalized and they kept me for about a week.
YES there was only one medication that would take away the infection in my kidney. That is called invans and it can be only administered through an iv.
Only 3 hospital stays in a month to get me half way normal.
I am home now with no treatments or antibiotics. YAY!!!
I am resting and looking into what i have to do next, thanks so much the links.
The pain was unreal and i thought that i was going to die before my birthday. lucky in 4 more days ill see 22 and many more birthdays to come.
