Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD) Support Group
Polycystic kidney disease (PKD) is a progressive, genetic disorder of the kidneys. It occurs in humans and other organisms. PKD is characterised by the presence of multiple cysts (polycystic) in both kidneys. The disease can also damage the liver, pancreas and rarely the heart and brain.
So you don't know for sure that it's PKD? Get her GCP to go over her other numbers. Tell him you are concerned. I usually write down a list of questions I want to ask, because I'll get into the office and forget half of my questions. If you believe it's a kidney problem then Tylenol is the right thing to give her. NEVER give her Advil, it's hard on the kidneys.
Good luck and please come back and let us know how she's doing.
Declining kidney function is a normal part of the aging process, which begins around the age of 30-40. The average eGfr range for someone of your mother's age is 47-72. After the age of 90 this drops to 41-65. She us a little below what is regarded as "normal" for her age, but as Shirleymac says, eGfr figures have a margin of error and can vary from day to day, so on another day your mother may well be within the average. I don't think doctors will worry too much about these figures at this age, especially if there are more pressing concerns. However, there may be a need for some pain relief. Below a certain level of function (usually about 30%), drug dosages may need to be adjusted, too. The other thing is to check how much your mother is drinking. The elderly have reduced thirst messages so often do not take in enough fluids. Not drinking enough can contribute to kidney pain. She may be restricting her fluid intake because of the continence issues you mention and may not be keen to drink more. I have a very elderly relative who has no health issues but she does need to wear incontinence pads.
Good luck with supporting your mother.
