Polycystic kidney disease (PKD) is a progressive, genetic disorder of the kidneys. It occurs in humans and other organisms. PKD is characterised by the presence of multiple cysts (polycystic) in both kidneys. The disease can also damage the liver, pancreas and rarely the heart and brain.

4 days until my AV fistula

Tuesday next week I am having an AV fistula installed. I have my first live donor being tested, so they are getting me ready for dialysis. I've had chronically infected kidneys for at least a decade. So as soon as a match is found, my last kidney comes out and hopefully the infection(s) with it. They will watch me for 6 weeks to make sure that I remain infection free to keep the new kidney safe.

Please say a little prayer for me!

Everything went really smoothly. They used a conscious sedation. I have no memory of anything. I didn't even have any discomfort from the procedure until about 12 hours later. 30 mins into recovery - "Mr. Penrod, we really need you to wake up so we can help our next patients". Man, I can't remember the last time I slept so well. :-)

A day later and the pain is at the high end of mild. So my kidney pain dwarfs this little discomfort.

I knew going into this that my veins are on the small side. There is a chance in two months that I have to switch to a synthetic vein. I have a check-up in 3 weeks. So I could use another prayer for that!

I have my dressing off from the surgery. It is just a 2" incision about 1" down my inside elbow towards the hand. No (if any) muscles, no trauma to the tendons. It was a very *not quite" but almost pain free servery and recovery.

I think it was a great place to have a surgery. No noticeable discomfort except when I straighten my arm straight out.

I'm so glad your procedure went well, Thanks for sharing. I have a high amount of anxiety about the entire process from fistula to dialysis, to transplant. This takes some anxiety away hearing about your experience.
