At first I was in favor of the bail-out as I think there's a good chance without it we'll end up in a depression. Since it hasn't happened and the more I listen to the likes of Rush, Newt Gingrich and other conservatives the more I think we ought to just let the market correct itself and live with the consequences.
Actually, what you suggest was seriously advocated by Pat Robertson when he ran for president in 1988. It's from the Old Testament, and called "The Year of Jubilee." It refers to a date every fifty years when all debts, public and private, are forgiven.
The lenders absolutely have to repay we taxpayers for this bailout. That's the rub between the DemonRats and Republicans -- the Dems just want to GIVE them the money, while Reps want to LOAN it to them.
